Re: PLEASE READ: My Fantasy Oscar League

I see Green Book as more of a Driving Miss Daisy than a Hidden Figures or The Help . Peter Farrell, like Bruce Beresford, could be left off the list of nominees for direction and it could still win Best Picture. It's possible that A Star Is Born will get the most nominations and fail to win most of ...

Re: PLEASE READ: My Fantasy Oscar League

I have no idea how such a thing would work, but if you're going to do this before the nominations start coming out you'd better hurry - the Independent Spirits announce their nominations in five days on November 16th. There are no front-runners in any of the categories. It's time for a feel-good mov...

Best Cinematography 1961

Black-and-White The obvious omissions are the year's eligible non-Hollywood films, La Dolce Vita , L'Avventura , Two Women and Rocco and His Brothers from Italy, Breathless from France, Ballad of a Soldier from the U.S.S.R. and The Bridge from West Germany to cite the most obvious. Certainly, there ...

Re: Everything Is Great and Amazing

One thing that really bugs me is the rap stereotypical white men get for supporting Trump and Trumpism when white women can be just as obtuse. Here's a bit of fresh perspective: From the Daily Beast's Goldie Taylor: Dear White Lady, What Are You Doing to Us? If we’re going to be sisters, the first r...

Jeff Sessions has just resigned at Trump's request. Sessions' chief of staff, Matthew Whitaker, who has criticized the Mueller investigation, is the Acting Attorney General.

Re: Everything Is Great and Amazing

Great that the Dems are taking back the House in January. Maybe they'll actually get something done. But the story in the Senate is truly heartbreaking. It's time for the pundits to stop saying Hillary was a flawed candidate, that many of the Trump voters wanted a change, didn't realize how odious h...

Re: Everything Is Great and Amazing

The Dems just got their 23 pickups. Now it's just a matter of by how much they lead. Looks like 7 more for sure.

Re: Everything Is Great and Amazing

I haven't gotten home yet and stationed myself in front of Rachel and Brian yet...but is it already time to vomit?!?! Is this happening? I don't want to be dramatic or maybe I just have no other choice. Like I said I'm not seeing what's left...but at 95% please let it be all Dade and Broward or if ...

Re: Everything Is Great and Amazing

There's also another question that doesn't seem to be on most folks' radar, but I've been seriously pondering -- if we end up with a 50-50 Senate (or 50-49 on election night, with the Mississippi runoff basically a de facto Republican pickup), what's the likelihood of Chuck Schumer offering Lisa Mu...

Re: Everything Is Great and Amazing

I'm cautiously optimistic - hoping for the Dems to take all the close races with even Heidi Heitkamp winning from behind again, but given the many disappointing outcomes I've seen since Nixon in '68, I'm prepared to suffer through two more years until 2020 when things will have gotten so bad no will...

Re: A Star is Born reviews

Although nothing really surprises me anymore, I was shocked as I said to find people in their 60s going on 70s who have had a lifetime of opportunities to have at least seen the Cukor version, if not the Wellman, not to have seen it. The pre-restored version had frequent showings on TV in the days ...

Re: All Is True

I don't see Branagh's film getting anywhere near the Best Picture race. I didn't see it getting anything until I thought of the Dench connection which is in line with 63-year-old Willem Dafoe in the hunt for Best Actor as 37-year-old Vincent Van Gogh.

Re: Best Cinematography 1962

Something ate my long post, so here's the synopsis: Black-and-White: I'd replace Birdman of Alcatraz , What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? and the godawful Two for the Seesaw with Advise & Consent , Billy Budd and The Manchurian Candidate and give the award, as the Academy did, to The Longest Day o...
