Re: The Official Review Thread of 2018

Green Book could still rally when it goes wide. Word-of-mouth should help it beyond the critics. Let's keep in mind that it beat A Star Is Born for the audience award at Toronto, no guarantee of its Oscar potential but I wouldn't count it out yet. On the other hand, what is the audience for Vice ? ...

Re: Film Independant Spirit Awards

From the FAQ on their website: How does the Spirit Awards define an “American” narrative feature? The Spirit Awards defines an “American production” as: A film in which U.S. citizens or permanent residents are credited in at least two of the following positions: director, writer or producer. This ca...

Re: Widows reviews

All the references to the series I've seen point to the 1983 original.

Re: Film Independant Spirit Awards

Here's Scott Feinberg's analysis. https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/race/spirit-awards-deciphering-nominations-snubs-1162029 I'm not sure I agree with his statement that an Indie snub means the end of the road for Oscar consideration. While that has generally been the case in the past, I think that ...

Re: Mary Queen of Scots reviews

Yes, the critics seem to have gone gaga over this one which is more removed from history than any of the other versions starting with Ronan's Scottish accent - Mary was born in Scotland but her father (James V) died when she was an infant. She was raised in France by her French mother and did not re...

Re: Everything Is Great and Amazing

The Broward County re-count found fewer ballots for Nelson (D) but it's OK because the Broward County re-count has been thrown out because it was submitted two minutes late. It was two minutes late because the clerk uploading the count to the Florida Secretary of State's system didn't know how to wo...

Re: Coming DVDs

The Kino Lorber deal is limited to 130 titles so any that have already been licensed to Lionsgate, Shout! Factory or other studios will be excluded.

Re: Best Cinematography 1960

Night and Fog in Japan[/i] was not released in the U.S. until 1985 when the post- Limelight rule was probably in effect barring nominations for films more than a few years old (is it two or three?) from nominations. Off topic but does that mean the Welles film won't be up for Academy consideration ...

Re: Best Cinematography 1960

You beat me to the punch! I just checked on Wild River . It did include archival footage in black-and-white, but yes, it was a color film that should have been under consideration in that category. Substitute The Virgin Spring , Hiroshima, Mon Amour , Never on Sunday or Conspiracy of Hearts . Purple...

Best Cinematography 1960

Black-and-White I have no idea how the silly, half-baked Bob Hope-Lucille Ball comedy, The Facts of Life earned Charles Lang a nomination alongside the four great films it was up against. Ellsworth Fredericks should have gotten that slot for Wild River . Inherit the Wind with its beautifully shot in...

Re: Everything Is Great and Amazing

Trump wouldn't know that. He's never purchased a box of cereal in his life. I doubt he's ever purchased anything for himself. He's always had flunkies around. He's not having a nervous breakdown. He's having a fit because he didn't get his way like a petulant toddler. People keep hoping he cracks up...

Re: PLEASE READ: My Fantasy Oscar League

I see Green Book as more of a Driving Miss Daisy than a Hidden Figures or The Help . Peter Farrell, like Bruce Beresford, could be left off the list of nominees for direction and it could still win Best Picture. It's possible that A Star Is Born will get the most nominations and fail to win most of ...

Re: PLEASE READ: My Fantasy Oscar League

I have no idea how such a thing would work, but if you're going to do this before the nominations start coming out you'd better hurry - the Independent Spirits announce their nominations in five days on November 16th. There are no front-runners in any of the categories. It's time for a feel-good mov...

Best Cinematography 1961

Black-and-White The obvious omissions are the year's eligible non-Hollywood films, La Dolce Vita , L'Avventura , Two Women and Rocco and His Brothers from Italy, Breathless from France, Ballad of a Soldier from the U.S.S.R. and The Bridge from West Germany to cite the most obvious. Certainly, there ...
