Re: Screen Actors Guild Awards

Picture and far more likely director will probably become clearer nearer the awards. I wish it were that unclear. Roma feels like a certainty to me. (The Oscars have turned against me this decade, so I've learned to trust this sinking feeling.) It's auteur-driven, starring unknowns (to us, at least...

Re: LA Critics Winners

None of this is because people disregard their own opinions and check the gross chart before marking ballots (way to build a straw man, rolo). They happen because, even in this benighted age of pre-sold franchises, there's some relationship between how audiences respond to a film (recommending thei...

Re: Screen Actors Guild Awards

Aren't we underestimating Spike Lee's potential? Haven't seen his film but he surely has the "overdue" narrative written all over himself... Not just him personally but we should also consider the fact no black director has ever won while Mexican directors have been 4 of the last 5 winner...

Re: LA Critics Winners

No, but just like folks saying NORBIT cost Eddie Murphy his Oscar, I find these Oscar myths silly and am surprised to see anyone on this board perpetuating them. If you feel passionately enough to keep repeating it, I feel passionately enough to ask you why. Eddie Murphy lost because people ...

Re: Screen Actors Guild Awards

As for Lady Gaga, I wish you were right. One can say that Glenn Close isn't at her absolute best in The Wife - but she's still Glenn Close. A great actress. Lady Gaga, of course, isn't an actress. I know this, you know this. But we aren't American. The Academy is a mostly American group, and please...

Re: LA Critics Winners

Relax. I didn’t think your Broadbent/Vikander examples were good. Suddenly it’s “my rule” that commercially underwhelming movies can’t and shouldn’t win Oscars? No, but just like folks saying NORBIT cost Eddie Murphy his Oscar, I find these Oscar myths silly and am surprised to see anyone on this b...

Re: LA Critics Winners

Sure, Plummer was a living legend, but Broadbent was as well known in Hollywood at that point as Grant is now. Similarly, Alicia Vikander (a nobody at the time) won in Supporting Actress for a film which earned $11 million. Grant may not win, but I highly doubt the film's box-office performance wil...

Re: LA Critics Winners

Richard E. Grant isn't well known in Hollywood? He's been a respected character actor since the 1980s. He's a "That Guy" and certainly has more of the profile of a J.K. Simmons than anyone since Simmons. With over 120 credits, he's worked with tons of actors in Hollywood. I'd say he's got...

Re: LA Critics Winners

Richard E. Grant is best-positioned for the category, but I wonder if his performance with critics' groups is a tad shy of the steamroller he needs to overcome his film's commercial shortfall. Why does he need to overcome the film's commercial shortfall? Just because the idiot masses ignored the fi...

Re: LA Critics Winners

So, what happened here? Roma continued its winning ways. We'll have to wait on NSFC to see if it manages the still pretty rare triple of the classic groups. The Granik choice, while connected to a liked film, seemed a bit of a message -- as if to say, Cuaron already won here for Gravity, he's winni...

Re: Chicago Film Critics Awards

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR Steven Yeun, Burning I would love to see this nomination repeat at Oscars, but I doubt they would ever be that cool. After watching him for years as an affable but unremarkable actor on THE WALKING DEAD, I found Yen's performance in BURNING revelatory. For me, the only reason ...

Re: Golden Globe Awards

A Private War is a movie that was barely on my radar at all. Has anyone seen it? Is Rosamund Pike a contender? (Or is her nomination just the death knell for more highly publicized candidates like Collette, Davis, Mulligan?) I have (my full review is in the Official Review of 2018 thread). Yes, Ros...

AFI movies of the year Special Award (because inelligible) Roma Jeez. "Lest we get bad press and an outcry on social media for 'snubbing' Roma, here's a special award." The race is over, I guess. At least ROMA is an "American" film in the sense it takes place on one of th...

Washington D.C. Area Film Critics Awards

With a few exceptions, I could easily see this lineup matching the eventual Oscar nominees. Best Film: The Favourite Green Book If Beale Street Could Talk Roma A Star Is Born Best Director: Ryan Coogler (Black Panther) Bradley Cooper (A Star Is Born) Alfonso Cuarón (Roma) Barry Jenkins (If Beale Str...
