Re: Categories One-by-One: Cinematography

Man, you really should just skip blockbusters.

Like everyone else, I think this is a three-film race. I'm predicting The Shape of Water for now.

Re: 2017 Oscar Nominations

We briefly mentioned Kobe Bryant as nominee. This recent development to rescind his nomination has been below the radar (my first time hearing about it), but that's a sizeable petition. http://www.cartoonbrew.com/awards/13000-signed-petition-take-away-kobe-bryants-oscar-nomination-dear-basketball-1...

I actually want to see it, that's how powerful a drug representation can be.

Re: Categories One-by-One: Original Song

While "Remember Me" is staggeringly powerful within the film, the song itself seems kinda.. wan? It barely lasts over a minute (the flashback version or the climactic scene). Has there been a shorter song to win (1:49 seconds, if you go by the Bratt version - though the Miguel credit versi...

Re: Everything Is Great and Amazing

Greg. while it's true that Sanders is taking steps to be a better candidate than he was in before (performing outreach, boning up on foreign affairs), I have to echo flipp - I don't want anyone from the 2016 election participating (or Kerry or Biden). Plus I genuinely think all would be too old. But...

Re: 2017 Oscar Nominations

Uri's point is a good one, though. Compare, say, Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet. Both are from about the same Oscar era. Both have multiple nominations and a win. DiCaprio has acted in 8 best picture nominees, Winslet in four. Or the best leading winners from 1993. Hanks has 9 best picture nomin...

Re: 2017 Oscar Nominations

1. Yeah, I had Phantom Thread at six nominations (screenplay instead of director). I actually just saw it this weekend which is what convinced me to put it in. 2. You know, Oscar season makes hypocrites of us all (or just me). I spent enough of the Oscar-discussion portion of the year pushing the Ol...

Re: 2017 Oscar Nominations

a) I haven't seen Girls Trip, but Haddish's nomination announcement made me root against her.

b) Best Director is pretty phenomenal.

c) Underwhelmed by a lot of these otherwise.

Re: The Official Review Thread of 2017

Okay, anonymous, since you saw it can you explain why Jumanji is making so much money? It could potentially end up as a top five film from 2017, box office wise, and I legit have no clue why. Now, this is happening more and more with me and my understanding of the box office and what makes money, bu...
