Re: BlacKkKlansman

I saw this opening day, but have been relatively short on time as of late, so commenting has eluded me. I quite liked the movie as well, and think it's probably Spike Lee's strongest film since 25th Hour. One thing that really impressed me was his handling of the tone. There's a lot of humor in this...

Re: Honorary Oscars Wish Lists and Speculation

I'll piggy-back one thing onto Mister Tee's post, all of which I'd agree with... The Honorary Oscar certainly has been effectively used to reward people who fit in the "you should have won at some point, but you slipped through the cracks" criteria -- Cary Grant and Barbara Stanwyck certai...

R.I.P. Marin Mazzie

I knew she'd dealt with a bout of cancer, but had no idea it had recurred after her return to the stage a couple years ago. I was, of course, too young to see Passion in real time, but it was one of those shows that got a video recording that's widely available, so I was lucky enough to see her (and...

Re: Cinematography 1939-1966

As we get into these years, I know I won't be able to participate as much. There are certain years where I've seen all the nominees in one category, or am only missing one film, so it won't be a problem to fill in that gap. But there are also categories where I'm missing most of the slate, and some ...

Re: Best Cinematography 2015

This field mostly made sense to me. Son of Saul would be my chief (albeit likely chanceless) alternative. I don't really get the nomination for The Hateful Eight. I know a lot of brouhaha was made about the fact that it was shot in 70mm (and I saw it in that format), but I have no idea why a mostly ...

Re: Best Cinematography 2014

I'd wanted Bradford Young nominated for his impressive breakthrough year -- Selma was probably the more likely nominee (and would have been acceptable), but A Most Violent Year was the movie that really made me take note of his talent. I also think Nightcrawler, as in so many categories, would have ...

Re: Best Cinematography 2013

12 Years a Slave is one of the more inexplicable omissions in this category in recent years, given all it had going for it -- Best Picture winner, beautiful exterior landscapes, innovative/iconic shots (the hanging, the soap sequence). I'd have easily nominated it. I also like the lovingly shot futu...

Re: Best Cinematography 2012

I wasn't expecting to be such a voice of dissent this year, though I'm glad to chime in and give Mister Tee some company. I can't say I was too enthused about how this lineup shook out -- I would have easily included The Master and Zero Dark Thirty above most of the nominees. And it struck me as odd...

Re: Major Changes to Oscar Telecast

Here’s a wild idea: if the members of the Academy deem Black Panther to be worthy of a nomination for Best Picture, they should vote for it. If not, they should vote for something else. The idea that this movie is somehow more entitled to a Best Picture nomination than anything — and any Oscar vote...

Re: Major Changes to Oscar Telecast

A few more thoughts, after reading some takes: The best response to this, bar none, is Rob Lowe's, who tweeted: "Seriously, this “best pop movie” category is the worst idea the Academy has had since they asked me to sing with Snow White." But plenty of high-profile Academy members have als...

Re: Best Cinematography 2011

This year basically forced many of us to relive virtually the exact same scenario as our crushing '06 disappointment. I can't say the bench of candidates this year was very deep either, though Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy certainly would have been a deserving inclusion. The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo ...

Re: Major Changes to Oscar Telecast

I think I hate both of these changes individually more than any other change this organization has implemented in my lifetime. The Oscars are literally the ONE moment out of the entire year when below-the-line crew members -- the vast majority of folks who make movies -- get to be in the spotlight, ...

Re: Best Cinematography 2010

This is a good list, but the bench this year wasn't very deep -- 127 Hours is just about the only other movie I could have imagined breaking into this lineup. The nominee I'd replace would be The King's Speech, as this is one of its least impressive areas of achievement. There just isn't much visual...

Re: Everything Is Great and Amazing

Hoo boy. Mister Tee’s belief that things were going to start to happen a lot more quickly seems to be playing out.

The heap of trouble these folks are in just grows larger and larger by the day.
