Re: Categories One-by-One: Original Screenplay

2) it left the film with no below-the-line nods, and I believe no film since the 30s has won best picture with that deficiency I was going to save this stat for the inevitable Best Picture thread, but since I did a check, in the modern era, only Annie Hall and Ordinary People won Best Picture witho...

Some thoughts on this race, now that I've seen all five nominees: A Fantastic Woman (Chile) The Insult (Lebanon) Loveless (Russia) On Body and Soul (Hungary) The Square (Sweden) On Body and Soul strikes me as not hitting enough of a sweet spot anywhere to prevail -- it doesn't have quite the same le...

Re: Black Panther Reviews

Okay, I'll put down a few more thoughts just so I don't sound like a complete brat. First of all, I am 100% supportive of the fact that if white dudes get to star in and make huge superhero movies, then women should also have the opportunity to do so, and people of color should as well. And just as ...

I’ve seen Black Panther. (Which I consider quite an achievement, given the film’s seemingly non-stop attempts to put me to sleep for most of its running time.)

Re: Everything Is Great and Amazing

I hadn't thought about the NRA being brought up on RICO charges, but that would be icing on the cake. The end of the NRA and the GOP as we know them at the same time. One couldn't hope for a better outcome. Be careful what you wish for. Too much power on one side of the ideological scale is not nec...

Re: Categories One-by-One: Cinematography

Mudbound is a very deserving nominee, and of course Morrison's historic nomination was cheer-worthy. But I'd honestly be shocked if she emerged the winner Rachel Morrison will be back for round 2 next year for Black Panther. This is a convo for another thread, but I don’t see any precedent to sugge...

Re: List of submissions to the 90th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film (coming soon)

Caught up with On Body and Soul, and I feel like I might be on the same page as Precious Doll -- "silly" strikes me as a good word to describe it. Well, that's probably not entirely fair -- I thought it started off compellingly enough. The premise is definitely interesting, as a man and wo...

I hope no one has a problem with me lumping these two together, which I did because 1) the categories are, of course, identical, and 2) I think this is a year where these prizes will be awarded as a matching pair. The nominees: Baby Driver Blade Runner 2049 Dunkirk The Shape of Water Star Wars: The ...

Re: Categories One-by-One: Cinematography

I wanted to wait until after ASC to comment here, and now BAFTA has weighed in as well. I'd rate Darkest Hour the least likely to prevail -- I thought it actually might have missed this nomination for something hipper. As it stands, there are ample opportunities for voters to honor the movie (Actor ...

Re: Categories One-by-One: Original Screenplay

This seems like a category that could be a major bellwether for Best Picture -- perhaps in that those prizes could go hand in hand, but also simply for the fact that it could reveal major strengths/weaknesses for a number of these movies' chances at the final envelope. The Big Sick, of course, is ju...

Re: BAFTA Nominations & Predictions

This is probably a topic for a longer Best Picture thread, but... The two films that have done the best by far with the tv precursors are The Shape of Water and Three Billboards. It would seem to me that these are the two strongest candidates overall, but there seems to be a narrative out there that...

I'm not sure Jane would have necessarily won this outright if it had been nominated, but it definitely might have -- I'd guess the fact that so much of the film relied upon found footage (genuinely fascinating found footage, it must be said) probably irked the documentary branch enough to box it out...

Re: Isle of Dogs

Since that time they have been advertising the film via a 'turn off your mobile telephone' message, which is rather odd given these days you hardly ever hear anyone's phone ring. I'm so glad to hear that this has been your experience, because in mine, outrageous audience behavior at theaters just k...
