Re: The Post reviews

He looked almost as bad as poor Michael Stuhlbarg who looked like a vampire drag queen who is “presenting male” for a night in a speakeasy. I burst out laughing at this line. It just sums up how bad so many of the wigs are in this movie. Wow, you guys all really hate that scene of Streep descending...

Re: Nominations Landscape -- Part 1: Best Picture

American Honey got no Oscar nominations. I'm not sure where that comparison fits in. They are both festival-praised, verite-style independent films about young people living in poverty, set against the commercial sprawl of America. American Honey got zero Oscar nods. So if Florida Project gets only...

Re: Nominations Landscape -- Part 1: Best Picture

Great analysis of where the race stands as we head into next week. There's a good possibility The Post ends up having a Selma-like haul. I've learned not to bet against Meryl Streep -- and probably won't be doing so this year -- but should she miss, it's very possible the movie only hangs on to Pict...

This is the first mention for The Lost City of Z anywhere this season — might it still have a fighting chance...

Re: Call Me By Your Name reviews

I think one thing that could have been clarified to assuage Sabin's issue is more exploration of what Oliver sees in Elio (i.e. what this hunk sees in this little boy, because that's definitely what it plays like.) There's a degree to which the answer is implicit in the era -- I imagine Oliver's deg...

Re: The Broadcast Film Critics (Critics Choice) Awards nominations

The top takeaways would have to be that this group further muddied the Best Picture race by passing on both Globe winners for Picture and Screenplay, instead choosing The Shape of Water and Get Out in those categories. But these goons endorsed all four of HFPA's acting winners, including the support...

Although that outcome would lead to its own kind of outrage -- and possibly the expansion of the Best Director category to 10 slots!

Re: DGA Nominations

My initial thought was "PHEW!" -- we avoided a by-rote Spielberg nomination, and included the Gerwig/Peele pair many were outraged missed at the Globes. My second thought was, the DGA list rarely ever transfers perfectly to Oscar...and the assumption that all five of these nominees are saf...

Re: Golden Globe Reactions

I feel like it was just inevitable that the sexual misconduct of someone in this year's race would surface. Have folks already begun making the joke about wondering if it's too late to recast Christopher Plummer in The Disaster Artist?

Re: CDG Nominations

Why would Call Me By Your Name be considered in the Contemporary category? It’s set in 1983. (Which was the year I was in kindergarten.) Good point, although I guess it would just depend on how far back the guild considered "contemporary." Because a good portion of I, Tonya takes place in...

Interesting that BOTH Darkest Hour and Victoria & Abdul missed the Period list. On the Contemporary side, another omission for Call Me By Your Name, which might have joined virtually all of the other contemporary-set Best Picture candidates here. (Although it's pretty lazy that the contemporary ...

The big omission would have to be Blade Runner 2049, which I still assume is very much in the hunt for an Oscar nomination, along with the five live action nominees here. LIVE ACTION Baby Driver Dunkirk The Shape of Water Star Wars: The Last Jedi Wonder Woman ANIMATED Cars 3 Coco Despicable Me 3 Fer...
