Re: Major Changes to Oscar Telecast

Here’s a wild idea: if the members of the Academy deem Black Panther to be worthy of a nomination for Best Picture, they should vote for it. If not, they should vote for something else. The idea that this movie is somehow more entitled to a Best Picture nomination than anything — and any Oscar vote...

Re: Major Changes to Oscar Telecast

A few more thoughts, after reading some takes: The best response to this, bar none, is Rob Lowe's, who tweeted: "Seriously, this “best pop movie” category is the worst idea the Academy has had since they asked me to sing with Snow White." But plenty of high-profile Academy members have als...

Re: Best Cinematography 2011

This year basically forced many of us to relive virtually the exact same scenario as our crushing '06 disappointment. I can't say the bench of candidates this year was very deep either, though Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy certainly would have been a deserving inclusion. The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo ...

Re: Major Changes to Oscar Telecast

I think I hate both of these changes individually more than any other change this organization has implemented in my lifetime. The Oscars are literally the ONE moment out of the entire year when below-the-line crew members -- the vast majority of folks who make movies -- get to be in the spotlight, ...

Re: Best Cinematography 2010

This is a good list, but the bench this year wasn't very deep -- 127 Hours is just about the only other movie I could have imagined breaking into this lineup. The nominee I'd replace would be The King's Speech, as this is one of its least impressive areas of achievement. There just isn't much visual...

Re: Everything Is Great and Amazing

Hoo boy. Mister Tee’s belief that things were going to start to happen a lot more quickly seems to be playing out.

The heap of trouble these folks are in just grows larger and larger by the day.

Re: Best Cinematography 2009

I had Bright Star and A Single Man down as my alternates this year. It's not that the Harry Potter movie is poorly shot or anything -- once you get past the first couple Chris Columbus movies, the visual imagination in the series improves considerably -- but this is such a random nomination. Why thi...

Re: Best Cinematography 2008

All those articles about the 10th anniversary of The Dark Knight this week had me in disbelief. I can't believe a whole decade has gone by! The big miss for me is Revolutionary Road, perhaps Deakins's best un-nominated work... ...which puts him in much the same category as Kate Winslet this year, no...

R.I.P. Gary Beach

Another one for the more Broadway-focused among us. I saw him in the two big roles he originated -- Lumière in Beauty and the Beast and Roger De Bris in The Producers -- and despite the film adaptation of the latter being a dud, it's nice that he got to have his Tony-winning role preserved for futur...

Re: Best Cinematography 2007

If someone were to make the case that this is the best Oscar Cinematography lineup ever... I'm not sure I'd put up much of an argument. There were other exciting options as well -- I'm Not There and Zodiac probably most worth mentioning -- but it seemed pretty obvious these would be the five nominee...

Wow, thanks for this. That one was on my list of nominees I assumed I'd never find in a million years (along with a bunch from that year.)

Halfway Through 2018

I had two overall thoughts while writing this post. The first is a reiteration of a thought I had months ago, that the first half of 2018 has been unusually solid. Certainly not as exciting as the back half of any year, but hardly anemic for films worth seeing. The second thought I had is that my cr...

Re: Best Cinematography 2006

Letters From Iwo Jima is my top omission -- given that it pulled through to nab all those top on-the-bubble nominations, I was surprised such a beautifully photographed Best Picture nominee couldn't place here. I also see that I had The Good German down, but talk about a movie I haven't given ANY th...

Re: Best Cinematography 2005

My alts would have been 2046 and A History of Violence. I found The Dark Knight a considerable improvement on Batman Begins in all areas, including the photography. I know there are many who instantly admired the grittier look of Pfister and Nolan’s take on Batman, but I thought this first film had ...
