Re: 2017 Oscar Nominations

I'd love to know what you would view as a dominant supporting role vs a lead role, because I thought Hammer was totally in the former category. Though I also think that Hammer as lead doesn’t help Stuhlbarg too much either. This is, of course, a never-ending debate. I guess I'd classify as "do...

Re: 2017 Oscar Nominations

First off, can I just say how much I disliked the way they did the nominations this year? The tactic of reciting a list of movies without any corresponding visuals/text made it pretty hard to process the actual information being announced. And as someone as the west coast -- who woke up at 5:15 AM t...

Re: Nominations Announcement

Mister Tee, you are probably right -- I didn't realize it was all done truly at the last minute, but of course, it would seem for security purposes that they can't have a bunch of people knowing with the possibility of anything leaking before the announcement.

Re: Nominations Announcement

Re: Tiffany Haddish. I'd like to think that she might be in and the Academy knowing this, will spring a surprise on her on Oscar nominations morning as she's making the announcements. It would be a viral-worthy moment and boost ratings for the show if this is the case. I'm personally rooting for he...

Re: Nominations Announcement

But why one guy and seven gals? Maybe they want to limit the possibility of one of the announcers having a #MeToo scandal break before now and tomorrow morning? I say this with no disrespect meant to Tiffany Haddish, but she strikes me as exactly the kind of performer to milk the moment of not bein...

Re: SAG Winners

And that was the scene they decided best shows off Timothee Chalamet's performance? I mean, I know he's pretty much destined to lose to Oldman now, but they could have chosen a better clip. Given that most of Chalamet's most impressive scenes are near the tail end of the movie, it's possible they a...

Re: SAG Nominations and Predictions

I don't know that I have any great predictions, but my ONE wish is that we don't just simply get a repeat of the Oldman/McDormand/Rockwell/Janney Globe/Broadcasters slate. (Of course, the one category where I'd most like to see an upset -- Best Actor -- is the one that seems least likely to provide ...

Re: Nominations Landscape -- Part 2: The Rest

I can't claim to have any great crystal ball in terms of the director category. I'm probably going to end up predicting the DGA five, simply for Sabin's reasoning -- none of them strike me as the one to obviously bet against. (The way, say, Garth Davis did last year, or David Fincher in the year of ...

Re: The Post reviews

He looked almost as bad as poor Michael Stuhlbarg who looked like a vampire drag queen who is “presenting male” for a night in a speakeasy. I burst out laughing at this line. It just sums up how bad so many of the wigs are in this movie. Wow, you guys all really hate that scene of Streep descending...

Re: Nominations Landscape -- Part 1: Best Picture

American Honey got no Oscar nominations. I'm not sure where that comparison fits in. They are both festival-praised, verite-style independent films about young people living in poverty, set against the commercial sprawl of America. American Honey got zero Oscar nods. So if Florida Project gets only...

Re: Nominations Landscape -- Part 1: Best Picture

Great analysis of where the race stands as we head into next week. There's a good possibility The Post ends up having a Selma-like haul. I've learned not to bet against Meryl Streep -- and probably won't be doing so this year -- but should she miss, it's very possible the movie only hangs on to Pict...
