Re: The Official Review Thread of 2017

DETROIT (Kathryn Bigelow) Considering the pedigree and pre-release hype, I was a little surprised at how this movie underperformed - until I watched it. This has to be one of the more unpleasant movies I've seen in recent years; an atonal mish-mash of styles with noble intentions that nevertheless b...

An unsurprisingly excellent read, as always! I look forward to these write-ups every year, thanks Tee!

Re: I, Tonya reviews

It feels like the movie's makeup and hair has flown under the radar, but it is certainly worthy of consideration for all the spot-on period work and the demystifying of Robbie.

R.I.P. Dolores O'Riordan

The Cranberries' lead singer has died at the age of 46 of as-yet undisclosed causes. Having spent my formative years in the alternative 90's, the Cranberries were an important band to me. This is shocking news.

Re: The Official Review Thread of 2017

The magic period between Christmas and New Year's when every day is like a Saturday at the box office can also greatly inflate a movie's grosses to the point where you're caught off guard - "wait, Jumanji's made HOW much??" This was holiday counter-programming at its finest, and I think we...

SPOILERS He beats up the ad exec...that's a pretty shitty thing to do. Yeah, it takes that interaction and his later hospital stay to make him realize what kind of a monster he is, but I would hardly call his past actions abstract. They seem to feel the word "torture" is too vague/abstrac...

Re: BAFTA Nominations & Predictions

Well, as we saw with the attacks on ZERO DARK THIRTY and THE WOLF OF WALL STREET, depicting despicable behavior without explicitly attacking it means your movie is endorsing that behavior. In fact 3BB gives Rockwell something of a redemptive hero arc (especially the DNA scene), and McDonagh ...

Would this indicate that Darkest Hour may have a shot at any Oscar nods beyond Oldman and Makeup?

Is Three Billboards starting to pull away from the pack and moving into frontrunner status?

Is Paddington 2 regretting not having a week's engagement in the U.S. in 2017?

People were so relieved about Wonder Woman's lighter tone and it was such a huge hit that yes, this would certainly be an unsurprising nominee, despite the movie falling apart in the third act.
