Re: 2017 Oscar Nominations

We briefly mentioned Kobe Bryant as nominee. This recent development to rescind his nomination has been below the radar (my first time hearing about it), but that's a sizeable petition. http://www.cartoonbrew.com/awards/13000-signed-petition-take-away-kobe-bryants-oscar-nomination-dear-basketball-15...

Re: Black Panther Reviews

This was posted yesterday, so it didn't take more than a few hours to declare that, yes indeed, Black Panther is an Oscar contender. It stops short of calling for Best Picture, though, and argues almost solely for a Costume nomination. I'm convinced! http://www.vulture.com/2018/02/black-panther-marv...

The 60th Annual Grammy Awards

Anybody watch the show last night and had thoughts? My corner of the internet is pretty incensed, but apathetically accepting, of the results of the awards. Yet another example of the Grammys utilizing the black community's contributions to music, using their performances to bolster the Academy's cr...

R.I.P. Mark E. Smith

The legendary post-punk hero was 60 (and looked every minute of it). 2018 is off to a terrible start for music fans.

Re: 2017 Oscar Nominations

- At first I read "Agnes Varda Jr"... "a daughter?" I asked myself... Then I checked it and found out "JR" is (according to Wikipedia) "a French photographer and artist whose identity is unconfirmed". So, we have a nominee with no known identity. How cool/wei...

Re: 2017 Oscar Nominations

Christopher Nolan getting nominated for Best Director after his multiple "snubs" would be the news of the day any other year. Now, it's barely a blip. People are talking about Greta Gerwig and Jordan Peele. And Martin McDonagh getting snubbed is second-biggest news. How pleasant that even...

Haha, you would have been better off posting ones you hadn't. I bungled the format.

Which Nominees Have You Seen?

Apologies if this could be moved to a more relevant thread, but I recall threads like these from past years. I think usually it's a list of ones you HAVEN'T seen yet, but here is my list of what I have seen, as of Oscar nomination morning: Dunkirk Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri Baby Drive...

Re: It's Trivia Time

The list of critically acclaimed musicians scoring Oscar nods expands again this year: Raphael Saadiq, Mary J. Blige, Sufjan Stevens and Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood all scoring music nominations. Greenwood's feels especially overdue. Last year's winners Benji Pasek and Justin Paul, as well as previo...

Is Kobe Bryant arguably the most acclaimed former NBA star to be an Oscar nominee (Best Animated Short Film, Dear Basketball)?

Re: 2017 Oscar Nominations

a) I haven't seen Girls Trip, but Haddish's nomination announcement made me root against her. I didn't mind the mugging as much as her inability to pronounce names, especially Daniel Kaluuya's. It slowly progressed from charming and irreverent to grating, but the commentators on the ABC stream I wa...

Re: The Official Review Thread of 2017

DETROIT (Kathryn Bigelow) Considering the pedigree and pre-release hype, I was a little surprised at how this movie underperformed - until I watched it. This has to be one of the more unpleasant movies I've seen in recent years; an atonal mish-mash of styles with noble intentions that nevertheless b...
