Re: The Official Review Thread of 2018

Going back to the Simon thoughts, this quote is from a longer piece on Queer Cinema. Beyond discourse, the question of what makes a film queer has become subsumed by aesthetics and narratives that display a straight gaze. The most egregious example is one of the most recent: Love, Simon, a gay bildu...

Re: The Official Review Thread of 2018

Re: Blockers and Love, Simon. One of them is an openly gay-themed movie marketed as such, while the other initially appears to be a gross-out comedy but features an un-marketed and affecting gay sub-plot handled, I thought, quite gracefully. One of the bigger surprises of the year so far.

Re: The Americans: Final Season

I tend to leave the reviewing and pontificating to the paid professionals, but last week's episode with the Thanksgiving dinner was superb. It's going to be a wrenching final four episodes.

Pulitzer Prize - Fiction 2018

Andrew Sean Greer - Less

Runners-Up:
Elif Batuman - The Idiot
Hernan Diaz - In the Distance

By coincidence, I am just in the middle of Batuman's excellent novel (it is on the shortlist of the IMPAC Dublin Literary Award), and I've just started on Greer's winning novel. So far, so good!

Re: 2018 Pulitzer Prizes

Kendrick can't even buy a Grammy AOTY, but this is pretty damn good. First non-jazz, non-classical winner of the music prize, an award that CNN opines is a "jab in the eye of Trump". There is an interesting quote on Billboard from an interview with a board member: You'd be amazed if you wa...

R.I.P. Stephen Hawking

I think as the subject of Errol Morris' "A Brief History of Time", as well as having been a pervasive pop culture touchstone of the past three or four decades, his loss merits a mention here.

Re: Ready Player One reviews

I'm still ready for the adaptation of this horrendously-written novel to get generally mediocre reviews and do middling box office, especially since these reviews scan as less than enthusiastic - but maybe that's just wishful thinking. How big is the market for a movie that just endlessly regurgitat...

Re: Categories One-by-One: Best Actor

A pretty balanced essay that has some spoilers so I didn't read portions of it. "Washington has a slim shot at winning Oscar gold this weekend. Oldman as Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour is positioned at the front-runner with a narrative about his win being long overdue. If there will be an up...

Re: Isle of Dogs

Since that time they have been advertising the film via a 'turn off your mobile telephone' message, which is rather odd given these days you hardly ever hear anyone's phone ring. I'm so glad to hear that this has been your experience, because in mine, outrageous audience behavior at theaters just k...

9 out of 10 as well. That nasty box office question!
