Re: 2019 Tony Nominations

I didn't come in until late as I forgot it was on. As such, I missed most of the show. I saw the numbers from Choir Boy (it's a play?), Hadestown, Cher, and Kiss Me Kate. The Kiss Me Kate number was dreadful. I was fascinated by the one from Hadestown. The Choir Boy wasn't bad and the Cher one was o...

Re: Campaign 2020

Obama tried working with Republicans and look how that ended up. The time for working with a belligerent and petulant Republican party is at an end.

Re: The 2019 Honorary Oscars

They've been announced: Hersholt to Geena Davis; and Honorary Oscars to David Lynch, Wes Studi, and Lina Wertmuller. Can't really disagree with any of these choices. I believe Wertmuller becomes the first woman to earn an honorary Oscar for direction. THE ACADEMY TO HONOR GEENA DAVIS, DAVID LYNCH, W...

Re: Lillian Gish: should a great actor be judged by a racist film?

Griffith was a great figure in cinema history. Intolerance was his apology for Birth of a Nation. While perhaps naming things after him isn't the best option, he shouldn't be forbidden from being seen or discussed. Lillian Gish on the other hand, made one racist film, but her career is not defined b...

Re: Oscar Face Offs

There are 20 total categories. We're looking at groups of ten for 9 decades in several of them. There will be ten polls each week (some weeks towards the end might have fewer). At this pace, the first round will finish sometime in August I think. Then starts Round 1

Re: The Official Review Thread of 2019

They screwed the pooch on Captain Marvel in this movie. Her own movie is fairly good and definitely makes a good case for her as a character. She was not well used in Endgame at all.

Oscar Face Offs

I am trying to get the biggest possible pool of responses for this series of polls to select the best winners in Oscar history. If you could take a moment to submit your votes, I would appreciate it.

The Academy Award Bracket Face-Offs

Sometime in April, I will be rebooting the Friday Face-Off game on my site. I started the Friday Face-Off on Dec. 30, 2011. This first attempt didn't quite focus well enough on its strengths and, after 85 weeks, I pulled the plug. I restarted it on Aug. 9, 2013. We are now only about three weeks awa...

Re: Campaign 2020

Two questions:

1) What do you think about Stacey Abrams who is currently mulling a run?

2) How do the Keys currently play out in this presidential election year? I know the guy kept hemming and hawing between Clinton and Trump two years ago, but I wonder if they would be more obvious this year.

Re: Everything Is Great and Amazing

Sabin, I don't think it will be an issue for the black community. The Republicans (and Sanders supporters) tried the "apex predators" line of attack on Hillary and it didn't work. Anita Hill is the only part of that that could since women are one of the reasons why the midterms swung so fa...

Re: Felicity Huffman Criminally Charged

If colleges really wanted to stymie this kind of thing, which they don't, they could just say that anyone who donates over X amount will have their children barred admission. That, said, they won't. However, not all folk who build buildings do so to get their kids into the school. My alma mater has ...
