Re: Nominations Landscape -- Part 1: Best Picture

WALL-E had won LA Critics, Chicago Critics, Boston Critics, and Online Critics awards for Best Picture. It was nominated at the Broadcast Critics and it was top ten at the National Board of Review. These are not inconsequential achievements. I'd say it was far more acclaimed than The Dark Knight, wh...

Re: Nominations Landscape -- Part 1: Best Picture

That was also the year of the WALL-E snub. Yeah, Dark Knight gets a lot of the attention, but WALL-E was also a major snub that morning when many thought it would get nominated and the usual chorus of "they ignore animated films" built up.

Re: Nominations Landscape -- Part 1: Best Picture

American Honey got no Oscar nominations. I'm not sure where that comparison fits in.

Re: Nominations Landscape -- Part 1: Best Picture

I think there might be another dark horse worth considering: Blade Runner 2049. Denis Villeneuve came out of nowhere for a Best Director nomination at BAFTA with hometown fave Joe Wright available. The film is likely to be nominated in Original Score, Editing (ACE nom), Cinematography (ASC nom), Pro...

Re: Presenter Update Assistance

Well, I don't want to work on guesses. I wrote a lengthy e-mail to the Academy's Library to see if I could get some answers to my outstanding questions. However, after I did that, of course I found some others as I was doing some formatting. Yay for finding shit after the fact. Anyway, here are the ...

Re: Nominations Announcement

Last year they did that weird pre-recorded video of introductions with a live announcer listing the nominees. I cannot recall off the top of my head whether they did it in order or not. The video might still be out on the internet somewhere.

Re: Presenter Update Assistance

A couple of questions. on the 1963 Thalberg, the 1981 SFX, and the 1984 SFX, you say "not given." I just want to clarify that you meant they were not presented on the show and not that they weren't given. The Thalberg in 63 when to Sam Spiegel, the SFX in 1981 went to Raiders of the Lost A...

Re: Web of Sex Scandals

We all knew when this started that there would, unfortunately, be opportunists who used the movement as a score-settling mechanism or a fame-getting tool, but we cannot allow these isolated incidents, which are VERY QUICKLY rooted out and exposed and appropriately ridiculed, to stop the momentum of ...

Re: I, Tonya reviews

You really should watch the film before attacking Robbie's casting. No, she doesn't go the full Charlize Theron/Montser route of chubbing up and uglifying, but nowhere in the film does Robbie's Harding look or feel attractive. Perhaps that's partly her upbringing, or perhaps it's because of her aggr...

Re: Presenter Update Assistance

Thanks for the updates again. I did some further digging tonight (still haven't found my copy of Inside Oscar 1 or 2) and have what I hope to be the last questions I have... I am missing presenters (and where in the presentation award they were given for the following: Documentary Feature - 18th (19...

Re: Presenter Update Assistance

I've come across another bunch of questions. I will probably have another set as soon as I do some research on other things, but here are some of the outstanding questions I need help with. - 18th Oscars: Still need verification on who presented "The House I Live In" an Oscar - 20th Oscars...

Re: The Official Review Thread of 2017

I have seen Jumanji and it was the most enjoyable time I've had at the movies in awhile. I found the film incredibly funny. It doesn't take itself too seriously and, although it's built on conventional stereotypes of modern teenagers, they are executed well and are relatable. It's a fun adventure th...

I can't see how anyone doesn't see Dixon as a closet case. I thought this was fairly obvious.

Re: Pre-Christmas Look at the Top Races

Bennett Miller for Foxcatcher is the only director since the expansion to ten whose film didn't get a corresponding Best Picture nomination, so it's possible that someone from a non-Best Picture nominee could be nominated, but it's a remote possibility.
