Re: It's Trivia Time

Are we talking married couples or partners who weren't legally married? Because you can add in people like John & Faith Hubley who were nominated 6 times and won twice. There's also Alan & Marilyn Bergman, nominated together 16 times, winning thrice.

Re: Your Oscar Ballot - Best Film

1. Call Me By Your Name 2. Get Out 3. Lady Bird 4. The Shape of Water 5. The Post 6. Dunkirk 7. Three Billboards 8. Darkest Hour (there is no "The" in the title) 9. Phantom Thread Phantom Thread is last because I haven't seen it yet. If I could stop earlier in the list, I'd put everything ...

Re: Academy Members' Brutally Honest Ballots

I wasn't talking about the costume designer, I thought that was a woman. I was referring to the Daily Beast writer.

Re: Oscar-winning performances directed by women or POC

No one on this board lives in a country where discrimination of some kind isn't rampant. No one on this board lives somewhere that doesn't have major issues that need to be resolved. Reza, it must be nice to be part of not just one, but three different majorities in one's nation. You're straight, Mu...

Re: Oscar-winning performances directed by women or POC

From an American taxonomy perspective, specifically the census bureau's guidelines, there is race and ethnicity. Race is essential black, white, Asian, etc. Ethnicity is Hispanic or Not Hispanic. Thus, Guillermo del Toro would be classified by American census bureau guidelines white Hispanic. He is ...

Re: Academy Members' Brutally Honest Ballots

I'm fairly certain that the Daily Beast interviewee is a white male, very probably one of the people who made Crash a statement film about race relations. He says he 100% understood Get Out, then complained about how he didn't get why it was the social statement film of the year comparing it to Scre...

Re: Categories One-by-One: Costume Design

After the unification of Costume Design in 1967, now 50 years ago, there have been only ten winners, or one-fifth, that won Best Costume Design without a corresponding Art Direction/Production Design nomination. It has only happened once in the last ten years: Elizabeth: The Golden Age just at the e...

Re: Oscar quiz

I now understand where I come into this. I had asked Magilla if he could remember "You'll Never Know" being re-recorded for Shape of Water because someone had submitted it as a nominee for the OFTA award (several someones as a matter of fact). I didn't recall Hawkins singing it in the fant...

Re: Categories One-by-One: Original Song

You should really apologize to the rest of us for suggesting that our preference of Greatest Showman to La La Land is any way equivalent to support of Trump. And the narrative for Lady Gaga and Diane Warren to win had nothing to do with her being everywhere. It had to do with the song being from a m...

Re: R.I.P. John Mahoney

He did win a SAG award as part of the Frasier ensemble. He also won an award from Gold Derby (for what it's worth). He was underrated, that's for sure.

Re: Black Panther Reviews

Maybe this is the one? Who knows. I felt Wonder Woman was just top-end superhero movie when it came out, so I was resistant to calls for it to be a Best Picture nominee. Logan, on the other hand, like Mad Max: Fury Road, was such a departure from the norm that I had zero problem with either being to...

Re: DGA Nominations

Why did everyone understand the appeal of The Artist and not the appeal of The Shape of Water? The Shape of Water is an ode to Old Hollywood. Perhaps not the silent era, but certainly the monster movie era. This is an homage to films like The Creature from the Black Lagoon and others of its ilk. It'...

Re: The Official Review Thread of 2017

Since when do people care that movie musicals are anachronistic. I kinda of understand the frustration when something's about the music industry (see Dreamgirls, The). However, there is ZERO wrong with having an anachronistic score to a stage musical. A stage musical is, already, an anachronistic pr...
