Re: 2017 Oscar Nominations

To me the movie (through Guadagnino's direction and the acting of Hammer and Chalamet more than the screenplay) seems to adopt Elio's point-of-view so clearly that I feel every character is secondary because they only exist in terms of Elio. Not sure that I would've nominated Hammer, because I think...

Re: Web of Sex Scandals

He was exonerated in court long ago on charges brought by Mia Farrow who many believe put the notion of her then 7-year-old daughter Dylan's being molested by him in her head. The prosecutor declined to prosecute because he felt he couldn't get a conviction (which is often the case for sexual assau...

Re: Nominations Landscape -- Part 1: Best Picture

Somehow it's going to work out that The Shape of Water is going to be the only likely Best Picture nominee that I won't be able to see before the nominations. For whatever reason, it hasn't made its way to my town yet. I was at a theater in Nashville that was showing it in mid-December, but I passed...

Re: Web of Sex Scandals

The Aziz Asnari story is very, very irresponsible journalism.

This type of thing is how an entire social movement--an important one that is starting several useful and needed conversations--gets derailed.

No Need To Argue was probably the first CD I got obsessed with and listened to over and over.

Sad news, especially knowing that she still had youngish children.

Re: The Official Review Thread of 2017

I think it's a combination of factors: It works as counter-programming to Star Wars ; whereas Star Wars mostly appeals to men, this has more appeal to entire families, specifically those with children who are a little old to want to see Ferdinand . Plus, several people who saw the original movie in ...

Re: The Post reviews

Streep would have been fine with a better script and more subtle director. As for Spacek, don't care if she never makes another film again. I want her to be in at least five movies every year. But I think she's pretty happy with just doing a small role here and there, mostly on TV, and spending the...

Darkest Hour might be my pick for worst Cinematography of the year. Can't believe it got nominated here.

Re: Golden Globe Predictions Contest!

Plummer winning his category would be the next best thing for Dafoe, since I don't see him having any chance at competing for a second Oscar so soon (against formidable competition). What is it makes people predict him, if I may ask? I'm curious because I barely gave him a thought. I feel like Metc...

Re: Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri reviews

My take is pretty similar to yours, Precious, although I was expecting to like it after being a big fan of In Bruges . I felt like it was well-directed (I think McDonagh has a much stronger knack for filmmaking than a lot of playwrights-turned-filmmakers), but I think the script really let it down. ...

Re: Pre-Christmas Look at the Top Races

I've seen Darkest Hour (but not Call Me By Your Name yet) and I totally agree. Oldman is a weak frontrunner if I've ever seen one. Sure we've seen lots of biopic Best Actor winners, but most have either been in much stronger vehicles (Best Picture nominees that had consistently made the lists throug...

Clash Egypt, right after Morsi was ousted: During the protests, two journalists are detained by police and placed in the back of a police van. The van fills up on pretty short order, with Muslim Brotherhood supporters, with military supporters, and with some neutral parties who got caught up by acc...

Re: Documentary Feature Submissions

The only one of these I've seen so far is One of Us , which was a first-rate look at three people in various stages of leaving an ultra-Orthodox Hasidic community in Brooklyn. I was not, putting it mildly a fan of Jesus Camp (from the same filmmakers), but this was first-rate. Would really like to s...
