Re: The Handmaid's Tale (2017)

The biggest problem with it was the decision to go politically correct, and to eliminate the racial aspect of the book. This United-Colors-of-Benetton approach to tyranny and oppression is so wrong – misogyny and racism are fundamentally linked. I know that this color-blind take allow for more jobs ...

Re: Oscars' Hat Tricks party game

Looking at the Best Picture category, the streak from 1960-62 has to be one of the best selections of films the Academy has honored. Three all-time classics -- The Apartment, West Side Story, and Lawrence of Arabia -- all completely different in tone and style, and all among the greatest examples o...

Oscars' Hat Tricks party game

Some light entertainment to pass the time while we’re waiting for next year awards season to begin. Life is just a vast void right now, isn’t it? Name the best – and worst – three consecutive winners in any given category. I’ll start with supporting actress. For my worst I don’t stray far and go wit...

Re: Best Actor 2017

Who are better revered today, Dreyfuss and Brody or the actors they beat, Burton and Mastroianni for Dreyfuss and Day-Lewis, Nicholson and Caine for Brody? While I totally agree with you about Dreyfuss - even he gave a much better performance than the one he won for that same year - I'll have to di...

Re: The Shape of Water reviews

Watched this again post-Oscars (and needed to take my mind off some things...) In some screenwriting courses I’ve taken, we’ve learned of “The Pinch.” It’s rough 45 mins into a 120 movie (adjust accordingly for whatever length), and it’s described as a new plot point that carries through the ending...

Re: A quiz to shake post Oscar blues away

I forgot about Grant, but one of mine is very, very close to her. The other one is harder - her "costar performance" is a Hitchcock-like cameo. And at first I intuitively yet erroneously was thinking about Dench/Affleck.

The reverse ones also include Mira Sorvino.

Re: A quiz to shake post Oscar blues away

This was quick! Yes, this indeed was my intention. Now - can you name the other two (as far as I know) actresses who fit the bill?

A quiz to shake post Oscar blues away

Three consecutive winners in the same acting category had a co-cast member, in the film they won for, who would go on to win an Oscar in a non-acting category (all three co-actors won in the same category). Name all six actors and the categories they won in.

Re: 90th Oscars: Ceremony & Pre-Show Discussion

But yes, what sealed the deal for me was the disrespect to Jeanne Moreau. Unforgivable. It only reinforces my stand that the Oscars should leave world cinema alone, since they are only capable of randomly hand it meager crumbs without ever fully recognize its true merit. Leave her out of your In Me...

Re: Trivia

We can speculate that had the Academy been honoring costume designers in the '30s and '40s, Janet Gaynor and Adrian may have fit the bill too.

Technically, one might say Walt Disney and his wife, or Edith Head and her husband (she did have one, didn't she?) fit the bill, but really, unless you allow Tracy and Hepburn in, I can't think of other cases.

Re: 90th Oscars: Ceremony & Pre-Show Discussion

Here in Israel, in order to have a multichannel tv, you either go with a cable service or satellite one. For years, both have carried the Oscars, but yesterday, I found out that this year, the show was to be broadcast only by the satellite service. Guess what I have. So I had to watch it online, and...
