Re: Last Seen Movie - The Latest Movie You Have Seen; ratings

Vice (Adam McKay, 2018) 3/10 The rise and rise of former Vice President Dick Cheney, the power behind the throne of President George W. Bush. Christian Bale, wearing heavy facial prosthetics, does a grotesque caricature of the toad-like and very bland Cheney with Amy Adams as his dumpy Lady Macbeth-...

Re: PGA Winner

Hopefully it won't deter AMPAS from nominating it in various categories including Best Supporting Actress where Claire Foy has sadly been losing traction in prognosticators' predictions. Which is such a pity because Foy is outstanding in First Man. I'm rooting for her to get a nod followed by a win...

I didn't quite understand this, Mister Tee. Are you saying that Green Book, although set in 1962, should have had a 2018 mind-set on race in America?

Re: Green Book reviews

For example the fact that lately each year there MUST be at least one black actor - or actress - among the four winners - deservedly or not deservedly. In the recent Mary, Queen of Scots not only there are several black actors - and yes, in England and Scotland in those times there WERE black peopl...

Yes unfortunately you haven't progressed.......as far as race relations are concerned. Which is probably why Hollywood feels the need to reward films like Green Book out of sheer guilt.

Re: The Nominations Announcement

I don't know if I'll be able to watch it either way this year. I'm having my annual heating maintenance between 8 and 12 am on Tuesday. If the guy comes early, I will be in the basement watching him instead of the Oscar announcement. It's an appointment I had to make three months ahead of time so I...

Boy Erased (Joel Edgerton, 2018) 7/10 I kept thinking of Nazi death camps as this film progressed. The humiliation and shame forced on young men and women makes this true story extremely uncomfortable to watch. Gay conversion therapy is apparently a norm in 36 states in the United States. And it's l...

Re: Golden Globe reactions

Yes it's annual. Yes it's going to be for TV only unlike the DeMille. It's also going to be named the Carol Burnett Award. Dick Van Dyke should be the recipient next year before its too late. I was thinking Betty White, but Van Dyke would be a wonderful choice too. Some others who could well win th...

Re: The Wife

Colman has absolutely zero chance of winning against Close this year. Really? It'd be a pity because we all like a bit of suspance. But then there's only Glenn Close. There is rarely any suspense at the Oscars. But sometimes they manage to throw in a curveball although it won't be in the lead actre...

Re: The Wife

Still, Close is good. Her performance is more intelligent and more nuanced than the vehicle itself, but of course I don't think she SHOULD win an Oscar for such a flawed little thing. And will she win?I I can't believe that she will get many precursor awards - with the possible exception of the Nat...

Beautiful Boy (Felix van Groeningen, 2018) 6/10 Haunting highly-personal story about a teenage boy's drug addiction and the trauma his family goes through as they helplessly watch him spiral out of control. Based on a pair of memoirs from father and son David and Nic Sheff, the film is formulaic but...

Re: Golden Globe reactions

I think this is a terrible reason to vote for her, but here's Jeffrey Wells' reason for voting for Close in Sunday's Critics' Choice Awards: JW Pick: Glenn Close, The Wife / serious conflict here — my actual favorite is Melissa McCarthy but I’m also a Close supporter from way back. Plus a Close win...
