Re: A Message from Damien's Husband Ralph

I almost got to meet Damien when I was in NYC once to see a play. He saw that I had checked in someplace that was near his apartment and he suggested we meet for a drink. I unfortunately had plans I couldn’t break so I wasn’t able to meet up that night and I always regret it. I had the exact same &...

Re: Screen Actors Guild Awards

Hopefully this is the year the Academy pulls upsets in most of the major categories. At this stage anyway there appears to be a number possible outcomes in the major categories. I think the only one near a lock is Cooper. If Gaga wins the Globe & SAG she will be the frontrunner but a frontrunne...

Re: R.I.P. Sondra Locke

This is a shocker. As I get older 74 doesn't seem that old. Sondra Locke is one of those actresses that I always thought we never really got to see the full potential of. She was outstanding in The Heart is a Lonely Hunter. Later she got stuck in that Clint Eastwood rut - a slew of his lousy movies...

Re: Screen Actors Guild Awards

If she wins, it will be one of the most unworthy acting victories in the history of the Oscars. . It would be one of the most embarassing Oscar wins ever. And I guess that especially the Acting branch will realize that (before it's too late, I hope). But of course, it's not just the actors who vote...

Re: Screen Actors Guild Awards

The Regina King omission upended what seemed the one sure thing this year's Oscars had (well, apart from best song). And apart from Best Actor, which now is the surest thing ever. It was sure even before, especially after I saw First Reformed and realized that Ethan Hawke - good as he is - could ne...

Re: Second/Third Tier Critics Winners

New Mexico Film Critics Association: Glenn Strange Honorary Award – Tim Curry, Kirk Douglas, Angela Lansbury, Christopher Lloyd, and Dick Van Dyke What is up with this? I think it's a great idea. So many great stars and character actors go unrewarded during their lifetime. Each year give it to a bu...

8. The One Scene Wonder. (Maybe two, max). Or as it’s also known as, The Beatrice Straight. Guess some other recent examples from this category may include Viola Davis (Doubt), Ruby Dee (American Gangster) and Dench (Shakespeare in Love). And.....Hermione Baddeley (Room at the Top), Ned Beatty (Net...

Re: Broadcast Film Critics Awards

They're in the drama category because they're dramas. You're saying there's no such thing as a drama set in the music world. Would they have to cut all the concert scenes to qualify as dramas? (I know about Walk the Line and Ray. They should have been in the drama category, too.) Yet they gave 5 Gl...

Re: Broadcast Film Critics Awards

But the best argument against why First Man didn't get a nomination is that the studios cheated by pushing A Star is Born and Bohemian Rhapsody for Drama instead of Comedy/Musical. To which I say, if your best defense is that you were up against Bohemian Rhapsody, there's other problems. This is so...

I agree. It's certainly one of the best of this year at least.

5. The MVP. These are the members of an evenly spread ensemble piece who seem to stand out, for some reason. They are the likes of David Niven, Glenda Jackson #1, McDormand #1 as well. These particular three stand out not for "some reason" but for very specific reasons within the confines...

Don't you think Jordan's nod as part of the ensemble in Black Panther is enough that he has to take this slot too? I think Chalamet will get this spot very easily.

I guess you really want Hawke to get in :D

This ignores what a cultural phenomenon the film was. Yes very true. The first film about black cultu...
