Re: R.I.P. John Singleton

John Singleton's career was the most extreme example of starting at the top and making his way to the bottom that I can think in Hollywood, at least in recent decades. I wonder if there is now going to be some effort to re-evaluate some of his less successful work. The youngest Best Director nomine...

Re: 2019 Tony Nominations

For what it is worth, the Michael Jackson musical was supposed to try out in Chicago this summer, but was already pulled a few months ago and replaced with the Britney Spears show.

Re: The 20th Annual Who'll Be Back?

Another great write-up! Bonus Round Thoughts: For the Veteran Below the Line winner, I will highlight Diane Warren. There was some social media grumbling that the 10-time nominee had never won this year, but with Best Song so solidly in Lady Gaga's favor, there wasn't really a chance to make a push....

Re: 91st Oscars: Sound Editing

I’ll say this... I never for a second was taken out by the lip syncing. That’s sound editing. So, in this instance, sound mixing would involve the volume, pitch, and timbre of Mercury's voice; but, sound editing would involve how Mercury's voice matches Malek's lips? No, sound editing is the creati...

Re: 91st Oscars: Best Directing

That's a tradition that only started in 2014, but even the Academy rules specifically state that it's accepted by the director, but goes to the country of origin. From the by-laws: "The Academy statuette (Oscar) will be awarded to the motion picture and accepted by the director on behalf of th...

Tie Breaker One: Aretha Franklin (with as crazy as this Oscar year has been, I am assuming they won't hesitate to put a non-film person in this slot) How quickly you forget The Blues Brothers  Oh, I'm a good Chicago boy. I'm not allowed to forget about The Blues Brothers. But that is about th...

Re: 91st Oscars: Adapted Screenplay

I normally hate it when the try to line-up presenters to go with a suspected winner, but Sam Jackson giving the award to Spike Lee was awesome!

Re: Categories One-by-One: Best Picture

Roma has two things going against it. It will easily win the Best Foreign Film award. No film has ever won both. Z is the only film that was ever nominated for both in the past. I just don't think they love it enough to make it the first. Life is Beautiful, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Amour ...

Re: Anonymous Academy Members Ballots

I thought about Knight, but I guessed he would be a Writer's Branch and not credited as a director...makes a little more sense, though.

Re: Bohemian Rhapsody

I think the nearly 48-year difference between Jessica Tandy and Daniel Day-Lewis is probably the biggest gap. That is the biggest gap between the two lead acting winners ever. The second longest is only a few years earlier than that: Paul Newman was 41 years older than Marlee Matlin. If this year i...

b]BTW, Magilla[/b]: Did you get my private message yesterday? I'd have expected a reply by now, since I specifically asked for confirmation you received it. If not, it means something's wrong with either how I'm sending private messages, or how the board is processing them. I have three messages si...
