Re: PLEASE READ: My Fantasy Oscar League

This sounds so cool...as an Oscar obsessionist who also plays a lot of fantasy sports, I'm jealous! I think you are correct that you want films that will be in play across the board. It seems like there isn't an advantage, points wise, to winning Best Picture or winning Best Sound, so go for the fil...

Re: 2018 Baseball Post-Season

So, if you had the Cubs as first team to be bounced from the post-season...your predictive powers are way better than mine. It was an absorbing game, gripping if you had a rooting interest. A danfrank kind of game, I assume -- low-scoring, no home runs, the ultimate rally built on three weakish two...

Re: Best Cinematography 2017

I would not have guessed that this race would be unanimous. Sorry, I just ruined that! Although Blade Runner is a close second, after my choice Mudbound, and I’m happy Dealins won finally and for something worthy. My other nominees would be Florida Project, Darkest Hour, and War for the Planet of t...

Re: Best Cinematography 2015

I went with Sicario, although Carol and Mad Max are certainly strong contenders.

Other contenders for me: It Follows, Creed, Beasts of No Nation, Tangerine, Room, and Phoenix

Re: BlacKkKlansman

I haven't seen this yet (my weekend plans to see it got derailed), but what about Topher Grace in Supporting Actor? I've heard a lot of discussion about him playing David Duke, but haven't heard yet how people feel about the performance.

Re: Best Cinematography 2003

I voted for City of God, which has so much more life in its camerawork than the other four dull nominees put together. This is a lackluster group. As for also-rans, I will go with Sabin's citing of Elephant and Kill Bill. I would also throw a nomination towards The Company, a movie which most seem t...

Re: Documentary Feature Watch

Won't You Be My Neighbor seems poised to be quite the hit (there are full cardboard diorama posters in movie theatres promoting it...not sure if I ever remember that for a doc before). You can't count out RBG, which has become a minor box office hit (it has hit the Top 10 at least twice already) and...

Re: Best Cinematography 2001

For a year with so many great choices, this feels like a lackluster list. I voted for The Man Who Wasn't There, the only of the nominees I would have nominated (as will be a pattern for me from this point on, I went with the black and white nominee). This is some of Roger Deakins' most interesting w...

Re: Foreign Language Film Watch

Custody was not on my radar at all, but I loved Just Before Losing Everything (easily my favorite of the shorts that year). This just became high on my watchlist!

Re: Best Cinematography 1998

I'll join the crowd and vote for The Thin Red Line here. Not only is that cinematography gorgeous, but when it needs to it can be just as chillingly shot as a Saving Private Ryan, with Toll and Malick letting the camera linger, or letting little details preclude the doom that is coming just over tha...

Re: The 19th Annual Who'll Be Back?

Tee, wonderfully insightful as always. I have little to add in terms of the actual nominees. For the bonus rounds, you covered the people I thought of immediately: Robert Pattinson, Tracy Letts, Sean Baker, and especially poor Michael Stuhlbarg. The most obvious, though, seems to be Armie Hammer. I'...

Re: Oscars' Hat Tricks party game

Looking at the Best Picture category, the streak from 1960-62 has to be one of the best selections of films the Academy has honored. Three all-time classics -- The Apartment, West Side Story, and Lawrence of Arabia -- all completely different in tone and style, and all among the greatest examples of...
