Re: Unseen 2018 Oscar Nominated Films

dws, Can You Ever Gorgive Me? is definitely one of my favorite films of the year and Melissa McCarthy and Richard E. Grant are both excellent in it. I’m with Mister Tee in hoping for a surprise Grant win. I also loved the many supporting players, most notably Jane Curtain and the wonderful Dolly Wel...

Re: Reactions

Question: 3 foreign language films are nominated for Cinematography. Has that ever happened before?

Re: Reactions

Is Marina de Tavira the first supporting nominee from a foreign film since Valentina Cortese for Day for Night? I’m really happy for her nomination. I thought she was excellent in Roma. Sam Rockwell’s might be a “honeymoon nomination” but at least his performance in Vice is an actual supporting one....

Re: What's everybody reading?

Yes, let’s definitely revive this thread. I’m currently reading David B. Feinberg’s Eighty-Sixed (Viking, 1989). It’s a classsic in the 1980s literature of AIDS. It’s very sharply written with quite a bit of sardonic wit in the ‘1980’ section (in the latter half of the novel, ‘1986’ the plague has o...

I will - but I want a copy with your signature and a dedication. Or maybe just the signature - I'm afraid of what you could write :)

I think that could be arranged ;)

Re: Golden Globe reactions

Really? In that scenario, why wouldn’t they obviously be rooting for Olivia Colman or Melissa McCarthy? You’re spinning, hon. Olivia Colman wasn't even nominated in that category - stop drinking. Okay, well just Melissa McCarthy then (who’s been heavily lauded on this Board). Your Board narrative i...

Re: Golden Globe reactions

Okay, well, now you’re just moving your own goalposts. Your post specifically stated that people were “rooting for Lady Gaga to win” which never happened. Your post didn’t say, “their negative reaction to Glenn Close was a tacit endorsement of Lady Gaga to win.” I know it’s difficult for you to admi...

Re: Golden Globe reactions

Well, that’s all good and nice, Sabin, but Marco specifically said that people on this Board were “rooting” for Gaga to win and I haven’t seen that anywhere here, not even from the rando drive-by type posters with no posting history. Predicting her to win at the Globes is not “rooting for her.” I’m ...

Re: Golden Globe reactions

Oh, and also, ITALIANO, I’d love for you to cite one single person on this Board (along with their post) who has stated that Lady Gaga should win Best Actress this year. It, quite simply, never happened.

Re: Golden Globe reactions

I thought it was interesting that Close chose to stop by Fatal Attraction co-star Michael Douglas's table on her way to the podium at the Globes, but not her Jagged Edge co-star Jeff Bridges' table. Nor did she mention Globe nominee Robert Redford, her co-star in The Natural for which she received ...

Re: Golden Globe reactions

I think Max may have omitted that nomination because the film was met with such a lukewarm critical response and tepid box office. Though I felt Close (and McTeer) deserved their nominations but they had a sense of 'filler' to them. You got it, 100/100. I did say her 'last big Oscar-nominated role'...

Re: Golden Globe reactions

Her last big Oscar-nominated role was 30 years ago!

No it wasn’t. Glenn Close was nominated for Best Actress for Albert Nobbs in 2012, losing to Meryl Streep for her horrid turn in execrable The Iron Lady.

Re: 2018 BAFTA's

I actually thought that Margot Robbie was pretty good in MQOS. She was certainly more memorable as Elizabeth I than Ronan was as the title character. The “Your inferior?” line delivery was great. There was a slight edge of camp I thought she infused in the role that worked for the tone and design of...
