Re: Major Changes to Oscar Telecast

And moving it up to early February? Good god: there'll be no time to see the foreign/documentary nominees. And the precursor season, which already feels like fraternity rush, will be crammed into an even tighter window. Is there time now? Even last year, I only watched Faces Places, The Breadwinner...

Re: Major Changes to Oscar Telecast

It's sort of weird because last Oscar season I had and still have serious thoughts of scrapping seeing some the minor categories. I'd figured it was the 90th year and that would be a good time to stop seeing just about everything nominated, save Film, Director, Acting, Screenplays, Foreign Language ...

Re: Foreign Language Film Watch

Dogman/Happy as Lazzaro - Italy Italy would appear to have to good ones to choose from this year that are internationally know. Both happen to play at Cannes, both were well received and both one a prize each (Dogman - Actor) & Happy as Lazzaro - Screenplay). But Italy is notorious for going off...

Re: Major Changes to Oscar Telecast

Here’s a wild idea: if the members of the Academy deem Black Panther to be worthy of a nomination for Best Picture, they should vote for it. If not, they should vote for something else. The idea that this movie is somehow more entitled to a Best Picture nomination than anything — and any Oscar vote...

Re: The Official Review Thread of 2018

This is off topic and I didn't want to start a new thread and thought this would be a sort of appropriate one because I was sitting through a film when it happened. I was utterly gobsmacked at something that happened to my partner today. We are currently attending the Melbourne Film Festival which n...

Its about the possibility of being a contender not quality.

Re: Foreign Language Film Watch

The Guilty - Denmark This has been slaying audiences across film festivals last year. It's a very tightly wound thriller set in a police emergency room and it's one particular disturbing from a young woman who appears to be in danger, not to mention the fates of her children, that set in motion this...

Re: Major Changes to Oscar Telecast

Just a few random thoughts as I agree with just about everything that people have already brought up: - Shunting some of the minor technical awards to the commercial breaks is so fundamentally unfair. This may be there only chance to accept and Oscar and for the family and friend to experience on TV...

Re: Web of Sex Scandals

Well, Jessica Chastain who is one of the most passionate and vocal supports of #ItsTime has found herself in a tight corner: https://www.theguardian.com/film/2018/aug/07/jessica-chastain-accused-of-hypocrisy-for-working-with-matthew-newton I'd wager she never had any checks made on Matthew Newton. Re: Best Cinematography 2011

Another very easy choice, particularly with a film made with so much passion about the birth of cinema, it was impossible to go past Hugo - just gorgeous in every respect. I'm with Magilla all the way on Tree of Life though in Malick's post Days of Heaven I prefer to refer to the narration as voice ...
