Re: LA Critics Winners

I don't get why people would even question the relationship between box office and awards. We've talked for weeks here about how First Man and Widows -- each with a Metacritic score of 84, the same as Get Out last year -- have faded as awards hopefuls, because they've fizzled commercially. And, con...

A rather thoughtful take on Sondra Locke by Peter Bradshaw from The Guardian:

Re: Screen Actors Guild Awards

Picture and far more likely director will probably become clearer nearer the awards. I wish it were that unclear. Roma feels like a certainty to me. (The Oscars have turned against me this decade, so I've learned to trust this sinking feeling.) It's auteur-driven, starring unknowns (to us, at least...

Re: LA Critics Winners

Timothee Chalamet may be the internet’s boyfriend but that doesn’t mean anything in real life. I’m talking about the kind of popularity one builds over years of working and working well with others. The Oscars are an industry award, you know. I suppose the only missing ingredient in this discussion...

Re: R.I.P. Sondra Locke

This is a shocker. As I get older 74 doesn't seem that old. Sondra Locke is one of those actresses that I always thought we never really got to see the full potential of. She was outstanding in The Heart is a Lonely Hunter. Later she got stuck in that Clint Eastwood rut - a slew of his lousy movies...

Re: Screen Actors Guild Awards

Hopefully this is the year the Academy pulls upsets in most of the major categories. At this stage anyway there appears to be a number possible outcomes in the major categories. I think the only one near a lock is Cooper. If Gaga wins the Globe & SAG she will be the frontrunner but a frontrunne...

In place of Millicent Simmonds who steals the film.

Film Comments Top Ten of the Year. Like S&S complied from critics from all over the globe: 1. Zama (Lucrecia Martel) 2. Burning (Lee Chang-dong) 3. First Reformed (Paul Schrader) 4. Roma (Alfonso Cuarón) 5. Western (Valeska Grisebach) 6. Shoplifters (Hirokazu Kore-eda) 7. Let the Sunshine In (Cl...

Re: The Official Review Thread of 2018

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse I only went to this for two reasons: 1) Its being widely tipped as a possible Oscar nominee for animated feature and will have finished its run by the time the nominations are announced; 2) All the raves did get me curious enough. I have scant knowledge of comic boo...

Re: The Host of the 91st Academy Awards Is....

There's a concerted effort to get Ken Jeong to host. Whoopi Goldberg (I think she's a Board of Governors Academy member) endorsed him in Colbert and he also seems to be willing. He sounds like he would be a great choice. I only know him from The Hangover films, in which he was hilarious and upstage...

Re: Broadcast Film Critics Awards

The same year as Driving Miss Daisy , the Globes gave Best Actress - Drama to Michelle Pfeiffer for The Fabulous Baker Boys , a dramatic film centered around a night club act in which Pfeiffer's best moments are singing, most memorably "Making Whoopee" while slinked across the piano. Pfei...

Re: Broadcast Film Critics Awards

For what it’s worth, in 2000 Björk received a GG nomination for Best Actress in a MP - Drama, for Dancer in the Dark, a decidedly dramatic original musical. That's a really hard film to place. Whilst the drama category certainly first comes to mind it does have the classic trappings of a musical - ...

Driving Miss Daisy is an excellent example of category fraud. Haven't seen Green Book.
