Re: Green Book reviews

In the recent Mary, Queen of Scots not only there are several black actors - and yes, in England and Scotland in those times there WERE black people, but not many - but some of these play roles of ambassadors, etc - high positions which a black man back then couldn't even dream of getting to. If we...

Re: Final Nominations Predictions

Won’t You Be My Neighbor? seems the favorite, but did anyone notice it was left off by BAFTA? Was Mr. Rogers shown in the UK? It's practically impossible to separate love for the film from love for its subject. Won't You Be My Neighbour? was released in the UK (and Australia). I don't think it even...

Re: The Official Review Thread of 2018

Definitely agree with all of the positive things said about Shoplifters . I think it's easily Kore-eda's most accessible film (although his others aren't exactly impenetrable), and I think it's great to see him have some success in the States after all of these years. Totally agree that Sakura Ando...

Re: Final Nominations Predictions

Only predicting some of the categories. I know people are bemoaning what a weak year this is and that is certainly the case for American cinema but international cinema has produced a number of gems. The most disturbing thing will probably be the supporting acting line-ups this year and the level of...

Re: Vice reviews

I forgot about Nasty Habits - terrific film and when I first saw it I knew virtually nothing about Watergate and had no issues with the film. Have to admit I don't think it has aged that well as my second viewing a few years ago wasn't as enjoyable as the first time round, though second viewings can...

Re: Vice reviews

Cinema in general has been very sparse when it comes to political satire. I would imagine most satire is on television and of course comics in daily newspapers - which are dying out. The last great American political satires were from 1999: Alexander Payne's Election & Andrew Fleming's Dick. Iro...

Re: Bohemian Rhapsody

Bohemian Rhapsody speaks not to personal experience as the germ of inspiration but a rather a specialness that comes inbred, being destined to the all-important audience, which must explain why this film is such a hit with millennials. The film has been a huge hit with baby boomers who were fans of...

Re: Golden Globe reactions

Her last big Oscar-nominated role was 30 years ago! Yes, but you see - this is also a very American way of thinking. Because in Europe for those who are into movies (and of course when it comes to awards, you must only consider those who are into the field which that award deals with - would you as...

Re: Golden Globe reactions

Her last big Oscar-nominated role was 30 years ago! No it wasn’t. Glenn Close was nominated for Best Actress for Albert Nobbs in 2012, losing to Meryl Streep for her horrid turn in execrable The Iron Lady. I think Max may have omitted that nomination because the film was met with such a lukewarm cr...

Re: Potential Stats and Records for This Year's Oscars

You're missing the obvious big one - if Alfonso Cuarón gets nominated for Picture, Director, Original Screenplay, Cinematography, Editing and Foreign Language Film, he would tie Walt Disney's record for most nominations in a single year, with six nominations. At least in theory, he could break Disn...

Re: Critics Top Ten Films of the Year

Okri wrote:I wouldn't put a movie with televisual qualities (and I don't mean a TV movie) on a top ten TV list.

That's true though some TV films to have a cinematic feel to them, whilst some cinema films have a televisual feel to them - The Wife, a probable Oscar winner an arguable example of the latter.
