Re: Coming DVDs

Just an update on the Criterion Blu Ray release of the almost complete works of Ingmar Bergman - they are going to be Region Free. Great news for those who only stick to releases within their respective regions.

Re: Last Seen Movie - The Latest Movie You Have Seen; ratings

A Star is Born (2018) Bradley Cooper 2/10 Yeah. Sad but true. Now just read - if you have the courage - what the Americans on this board think of this movie (in the Star is Born thread). The way they reacted to it (or they say they did - some of them clearly didn't really like it but have to preten...

Re: List of submissions to the 91st Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film

Two more films neither which are unlikely to make any inroads into the contest. The Great Buddha (Taiwan) is an absolute delight and highly original film. It is the feature film debut of Hsin-yao Huang and goodness knows we need more talented Taiwanese voices in cinema with Ang Lee departing to the ...

Re: Best Cinematography 1964

These aren't actually bad line-ups. None of the nominees scream out as overtly deserving but they are in general respectable. B&W - I've only seen Zorba the Greek & Hush...Hush Sweet Charlotte on the big screen many moons ago and Fate is the Hunter on a stunning transfer on DVD from Spain. T...

Re: European trip

Well, I must admit London exceeded my expectations. I had been moaning when my partner planned and mapped out the trip that I didn't want to visit London, but I'm so glad we did and I would love to go back. We caught buses around mainly so me could get a good eyeful of the city and rarely used the u...

Re: List of submissions to the 91st Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film

I've just seen the Greek submission, Polyxeni and frankly found the film impenetrable. Really had a hard time with the film and its one of those experience akin to watching something through the bottom of a glass that I simply could make little sense of. Really doubt this will make any headway. I'm ...

Re: The Official Review Thread of 2018

THE MISEDUCATION OF CAMERON POST it's still a noble effort well worth seeing and writer-director Desiree Akhavan is definitely a filmmaker to watch out for. Grade: B Actually, Desiree Akhaven's first film Appropriate Behaviour marked her as a filmmaker to watch. As well intended as this film is, it...

Re: Documentary Feature Watch

Whitney (Kevin Macdonald) ***1/2 - This is one two documentaries on Whitney Houston coming out this year. I haven't seen the Nick Broomfeld one on Netflix (let me know if it's worth seeing even after seeing this one). This one, I think, is quite a very good one. It documents Houston's beginnings, h...

Re: List of submissions to the 91st Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film

I'm so pleased you enjoyed The Heiresses so much Anonymous. I hope both yours and mine own enthusiasm will encourage others on the board to seek the film out regardless of how it fares at the Oscars. It is indeed a very special film that tells a type of story we very rarely see and with such freshne...

Re: Best Cinematography 1965

My choices were very easy: B&W Ship of Fools, Colour The Sound of Music. Ship of Fools is the only nominee from the B&W list that I have seen on the big screen, back in 1989. I do remember a rather moody film with photography that helps capture the mood of the film. All the others were seen ...

Re: 22 July reviews

Thanks for posting the Slant review Franz. Very interesting take on the film and I'm inclined to advise people not to read the review until they have seen the film. Whilst I didn't agree with a lot of the review I could certainly appreciate the point of view being expressed. And I'm not too concerne...
