Re: The Florida Project reviews

I wrote a review of The Florida Project when I saw it last December but left it for afternoon cocktails out the back and when I returned and hit submit, it disappeared. This for me was one of the very best films of 2017. Sean Baker has always displayed such empathy and respect for his characters. Th...

Re: Categories One-by-One: Foreign Language Film

Haven't seen The Insult and have no idea when it will come my way. Of the remaining four I still think A Fantastic Woman is the one to beat for the reasons the BJ outlined. The added bonus being that Sony Classics are releasing it and they have had a very good track record with this category in rece...

Re: Black Panther Reviews

That was a depressing read BJ. I really do not like 'superhero' films anymore and tend to avoid them. Too many, too many sequels and too much of the same things over and over again. I avoided Wonder Woman and am eternally grateful to the good members of the Academy who saw it fit not to nominate it ...

Re: Categories One-By-One: Supporting Actress

But Lesley Manville is an interesting case – her nomination has perhaps done more to make this category fluid than anything since the TV awards got underway. She could definitely win at BAFTA, which has shown propensity for choosing British actors rather than Oscar favorites – Carey Mulligan in ’09...

They do in the acting categories.

Re: Oscar-winning performances directed by women or POC

It has been noted at this year's Oscars that Mary J. Blige is actually the very first actress to be directed to an Oscar nominations by a woman of color which was a bit surprising to me so I thought, how many performers were directed to Oscar wins by either women or POC? Here's a (probably) incompl...

Re: Oscar-winning performances directed by women or POC

Hmmm. If we're extending it to nominees, here are some additional names not yet mentioned from the same time period: Tom Hanks, Big (Penny Marshall) Emma Thompson, Sense and Sensibility (Ang Lee) Kate Winslet, Sense and Sensibility (Ang Lee) Barbara Hershey, The Portrait of a Lady (Jane Campion) Ca...

Re: Isle of Dogs

I saw a trailer of this about 6 weeks ago at the cinema only the once. Since that time they have been advertising the film via a 'turn off your mobile telephone' message, which is rather odd given these days you hardly ever hear anyone's phone ring.

Re: Categories One-by-One: Best Actor

Put it this way: if, early in the evening, Darkest Hour loses make-up to Wonder, will you be fully confident the same sort of brush-off isn’t in the works? Not saying it’s going to happen. But putting that possibility out there. It would be wonderful if Timothée Chalamet could pull off an unexpecte...

Your Oscar Ballot - Best Film

With just over two weeks to ago hopefully most board members will have seen most if not all of the best film nominees. What would your ballot look like? Question: do Academy members have to nomination the films from 1 to 9 or can they elected to just nominate 1 to 5 or 1 to 6 if they see fit? Mine: ...

Re: Molly's Game reviews

This was something I had no intention of seeing. The subject matter of gambling rarely makes for an enjoyable experience for me but there have been exceptions like Bay of Angels (1963), The Gambler (1974) & The Cooler (2003). But nabbing a screenplay adaptation made it a very reluctant must-see....
