Re: The Official Review Thread of 2018

THE MISEDUCATION OF CAMERON POST it's still a noble effort well worth seeing and writer-director Desiree Akhavan is definitely a filmmaker to watch out for. Grade: B Actually, Desiree Akhaven's first film Appropriate Behaviour marked her as a filmmaker to watch. As well intended as this film is, it...

Re: Documentary Feature Watch

Whitney (Kevin Macdonald) ***1/2 - This is one two documentaries on Whitney Houston coming out this year. I haven't seen the Nick Broomfeld one on Netflix (let me know if it's worth seeing even after seeing this one). This one, I think, is quite a very good one. It documents Houston's beginnings, h...

Re: List of submissions to the 91st Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film

I'm so pleased you enjoyed The Heiresses so much Anonymous. I hope both yours and mine own enthusiasm will encourage others on the board to seek the film out regardless of how it fares at the Oscars. It is indeed a very special film that tells a type of story we very rarely see and with such freshne...

Re: Best Cinematography 1965

My choices were very easy: B&W Ship of Fools, Colour The Sound of Music. Ship of Fools is the only nominee from the B&W list that I have seen on the big screen, back in 1989. I do remember a rather moody film with photography that helps capture the mood of the film. All the others were seen ...

Re: 22 July reviews

Thanks for posting the Slant review Franz. Very interesting take on the film and I'm inclined to advise people not to read the review until they have seen the film. Whilst I didn't agree with a lot of the review I could certainly appreciate the point of view being expressed. And I'm not too concerne...

Re: List of submissions to the 91st Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film

I guess Cuaron has this in the bag One would think so given the acclaim, however there is the hurdle of Netflix. This will probably be their breakthrough to an Oscar win. As more and more Academy members start working for streaming services and Netflix becomes the norm, prior resistance will breakd...

Re: List of submissions to the 91st Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film

Whilst it was expected the new Yimou Zhang may be China's submission, they have instead gone for a Jiang Wen film. What in hell does Zhangke Jia have to do for China to submit one of his films? Answer: make something that shows China is a pure phoney light. Ash is Purest White was unlikely to get an...

Re: List of submissions to the 91st Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film

Well, just about all of the submissions are now in. We are still waiting for China who have been delayed due to some public holidays but Zhang Yimou's latest film Shadow is highly considered to the be the 'chosen one'. Apparently the film is a return to form by Yimou who hasn't made anything of note...

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2018/oct/05/brett-kavanaugh-us-senate-vote-supreme-court Being on holidays has given me lots of reading time and I have no doubt in the validity of the accusations against Brett Kavanaugh and he is clearly not a fit person to be a judge, let alone a Supreme Court ...
