Re: Final Nominations Predictions

Anyone else feel like The Favourite kind of messed up their placement this year. With that fifth slot open, it seems like Weisz and Stone could have both picked up Lead Actress nominations, while Colman would be our frontrunner in Supporting Actress hands down. I don't think Weisz was ever going to...

Re: PGA Winner

A couple of thoughts, after time to sleep on it: This could be a one-off. The PGA is the oldest-white-guy-est of the guilds, and that demographic seems to like this movie the best. I think people underestimate the appeal a simple, technically original but familiar narrative structure has in this yea...

Re: Final Nominations Predictions

I simply can’t see Sam Rockwell being cited for that wisp of a performance. (The only similar afterglow-with-nothing nomination I can recall is Lee Grant in Voyage of the Damned.) Penelope Cruz for Nine? It was certainly a bad nomination that seemed tag-teamed with a win the year before. But the ro...

Re: Final Nominations Predictions

My guesses, with alternates and annotations: 1. Best Picture BlacKkKlansman Black Panther The Favourite First Man Green Book If Beale Street Could Talk Roma A Star Is Born Vice alt.: Bohemian Rhapsody I’m on my own a couple of ways here: 1) I just can’t see something as poorly reviewed as Bohemian R...

Re: PGA Winner

Yesterday, I had a horrible realization about why Green Book could win: we haven't had a travesty this decade yet. Think about it. Every decade, there's a universally reviled, talked about for ages travesty. Whether deserving or not. Last decade, it was Crash. In the 1990's it was Shakespeare in Lo...

Re: PGA Winner

I do have to say: this was a rare PGA where I had almost NO idea what was going to win. I could have made a case for half the films nominated. Now, let's recall that Green Book wasn't nominated for SAG Ensemble. So we're guaranteed a different winner a week hence. And, between now and then, it's con...

Re: PGA Winner

We've not seen a film's awards prospects collapse like A Star is Born's since -- what? -- Dreamgirls?

And for Green Book????

Re: Mary Poppins Returns reviews

Did you ever see The Simpsons' parody of Mary Poppins? It was called Sherry Bobbins, and it avoided copyright issues by not using any of the Disney film's music, but crafting songs that were so suggestive of the originals you couldn't miss the references. Who knew the makers of Mary Poppins Returns ...

Re: The Official Review Thread of 2018

The Foreign Language Film category really has the potential to be superb this year -- if Roma, Shoplifters, Cold War, and Burning (which might take a miracle, but I guess never say never) make the lineup, that'll be a slate that puts the Best Picture list to shame. If all those films were to show u...

Re: The Official Review Thread of 2018

I keep thinking I'll find time to write extensively about films I've seen, but it never seems to happen, and now we're just days from the first of our two High Holy Days, so let me mention some things in brief: I think, all things considered, Shoplifters is my favorite film of the year. It's for sur...

It's starting to happen, and it's only going to get worse. This can't go on much longer.

Re: The Nominations Announcement

Any word if both segments will be televised? Last year, I had to last-minute-scramble to boot up my computer to get the Oscar.com stream for the earlier portion; it'd be a lot easier if it all made it on air. (Especially since there are major acting categories in the first group, this time around.)...

The Nominations Announcement

Still no word on who's going to read the nominees next Tuesday, or how much of it's going to be on TV (last year it was only the second part). But this Tapley tweet breaks out which categories will be revealed where:
