7th. I'm assuming you forgot about Bridge of Spies!

On the money. Thanks.

Re: Unseen 2018 Oscar Nominated Films

Border is still in theaters in NY/LA (well, technically Orange County for us Angelenos) -- but by you it's at the IFC Center on the Avenue of the Americas according to the movie's web site. Thanks; it hadn't shown up when I searched the Moviefone site. Unfortunately...it has only two shows a day: 1...

Re: Unseen 2018 Oscar Nominated Films

Can anyone tell me how/where to track down Border? A search on both Netflix-es (DVD and streaming) yield nothing. It apparently played in NY in October, but was barely seen by anyone. Help.

Subsidiary question: what deal does the Swedish film industry have going with the make-up branch?

Re: Reactions

the only three movies that got the key film/director/screenplay/editing combo were BlackkKlansman, The Favourite and Vice -- none of which have been seriously spoken of as best picture front-runners. To carry this thought further in the "traditionally needed precursor" category... The Fav...

Re: Reactions

Unless I'm forgetting someone, Sam Elliott and Katharine Ross now hold the record for the longest stretch for acting nominations between spouses - 51 years, breaking the 45 year record of Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy that had held for 28 years. Actually, no. Humphrey Bogart was nominated for Casab...

Re: Reactions

Some might remember my wish from a while back: that, if it couldn't be a good year, it could at least be an interesting one. The first two rounds of TV awards have kept us on such a track, and today, I'd say, furthered the cause. Dare we dream of an old-time Oscar race, where the goddamn precursors ...

Re: Final Nominations Predictions

Anyone else feel like The Favourite kind of messed up their placement this year. With that fifth slot open, it seems like Weisz and Stone could have both picked up Lead Actress nominations, while Colman would be our frontrunner in Supporting Actress hands down. I don't think Weisz was ever going to...

Re: PGA Winner

A couple of thoughts, after time to sleep on it: This could be a one-off. The PGA is the oldest-white-guy-est of the guilds, and that demographic seems to like this movie the best. I think people underestimate the appeal a simple, technically original but familiar narrative structure has in this yea...

Re: Final Nominations Predictions

I simply can’t see Sam Rockwell being cited for that wisp of a performance. (The only similar afterglow-with-nothing nomination I can recall is Lee Grant in Voyage of the Damned.) Penelope Cruz for Nine? It was certainly a bad nomination that seemed tag-teamed with a win the year before. But the ro...

My guesses, with alternates and annotations: 1. Best Picture BlacKkKlansman Black Panther The Favourite First Man Green Book If Beale Street Could Talk Roma A Star Is Born Vice alt.: Bohemian Rhapsody I’m on my own a couple of ways here: 1) I just can’t see something as poorly reviewed as Bohemian R...

Re: PGA Winner

Yesterday, I had a horrible realization about why Green Book could win: we haven't had a travesty this decade yet. Think about it. Every decade, there's a universally reviled, talked about for ages travesty. Whether deserving or not. Last decade, it was Crash. In the 1990's it was Shakespeare in Lo...

Re: PGA Winner

I do have to say: this was a rare PGA where I had almost NO idea what was going to win. I could have made a case for half the films nominated. Now, let's recall that Green Book wasn't nominated for SAG Ensemble. So we're guaranteed a different winner a week hence. And, between now and then, it's con...

We've not seen a film's awards prospects collapse like A Star is Born's since -- what? -- Dreamgirls?

And for Green Book????

Re: Mary Poppins Returns reviews

Did you ever see The Simpsons' parody of Mary Poppins? It was called Sherry Bobbins, and it avoided copyright issues by not using any of the Disney film's music, but crafting songs that were so suggestive of the originals you couldn't miss the references. Who knew the makers of Mary Poppins Returns ...
