Re: The Official Review Thread of 2018

As far as Leave No Trace: What I can say for Debra Granik is, for someone whose films' subject matter is not really in my wheelhouse (I'm more disposed to urban settings/verbal characters, neither of which she much deals in), she manages to keep me engaged pretty much throughout. I don't think Leave...

Re: Everything Is Great and Amazing

To elaborate (earlier, I was too stunned to go on at greater length): I think this moment is akin to the Saturday Night Massacre during Watergate -- a scandal has already been growing for months, but this causes it to metastasize. The speechlessness and shock from the TV pundits was amazing to watch...

Re: Best Cinematography 2007

I've been slow getting to this because 1) it feels like a recent discussion (don't tell me it's 11 years ago; life can't be flying by that quickly) and 2) most of what I'd say has already been said. So, briefly: Notebooks tell me I had Zodiac and Into the Wild as chief alts, but there's nothing much...

Re: The Official Review Thread of 2018

Sorry to Bother You doesn't hit all its targets squarely (and, at a certain point, may take on too many targets, creating such a diffuse narrative that it can't possibly resolve all elements satisfyingly). It also has a somewhat over-familiar story-arc -- the go-getter who betrays his roots for the ...

Re: Halfway Through 2018

some people have praised Jennifer Garner in it, comparing her big scene in the film to Michael Stuhlbarg's in Call Me By Your Name . No one of sound mind would compare the two. Garner is generic; Stuhlbarg is transcendent. Thanks as always for this, BJ. A few thoughts: It's hard not to think of thi...

Re: Best Cinematography 2006

Children of Men not getting a production design nomination was hugely dispiriting in it's own right, I felt. I think it was you, Tee, that referred to the film as "eye-protein" (as opposed to "eye-candy") and that's how I felt about the work done there. Some stunning Guernica-le...

Re: Best Cinematography 2006

It'll come as no surprise to most here that I find this a spectacularly easy choice. But there are things to comment on beyond merely citing my favorite. It IS surprising to have a slate with no best picture contenders, especialy given that some of the best picture nominees seemed right in the branc...

Re: R.I.P. Liliane Montevecchi

As if this week weren't grisly enough, my wife's good fried Liliane Montevecchi died today. This is likely a bigger loss for me than this board in general. The Broadway-focused among you might know she won a Tony for Nine, and was nominated again for Grand Hotel, both of which she did alongside my ...

Re: Best Cinematography 2005

The nominees actually come relatively close to my own choices on the year. The Constant Gardener would be my prime substitution; whatever narrative issues I had with the film, the visual flash was impressive. (By the way, whatever happened to Mereilles? I don't know I've seen a promising career flam...

Re: Everything Is Great and Amazing

As radical as it sounds, if a progressive President and Congress is elected in 2020; and, the Supreme Court rules the passed-and-signed legislation unconstitutional, I think it would then be the correct decision for the President and Senate to increase the number of Justices in the Supreme Court. T...

Re: Everything Is Great and Amazing

I was planning on posting something about the manic pundit over-reaction to the Ocasio-Cortez win last night (a win that cheered me immensely, and is NOT, contrary to hot takes, a sign Democrats are in Disarray!!)... ...but that's small potatoes compared to the Supreme Court horror. The hypocrisy wi...

Re: Everything Is Great and Amazing

Yet another day when we can offer our heartfelt thanks to all those who stayed home or voted for a pointless third party because there was no difference between the two candidates.

Re: Everything Is Great and Amazing

I don't think anyone is letting the Mel-Jacket distract them from the full extent of the horror that's flooded our TV screens this week. That will be a lasting concern. However...it really was pretty unbelievable. Like many, I had to have it confirmed for me multiple times that it was for real, not ...
