Re: Categories One by One: Best Production Design

I don't think Bram Stoker's Dracula is really an apt comparison. It was very much in the period costume drama vein. It merely happened to be a horror-adjacent film.

Re: Anonymous Academy Members Ballots

Think about the kind of people who will talk on the record about their ballots. They are probably washed-up has-beens who lament the state of film today because they cannot get work. I doubt they are truly representative of the Academy as a whole. At least one hopes not.

Re: Everything Is Great and Amazing

Don't forget that Sanders' permissively sexist campaign back in 2016 was as anti-woman as any could be. Even Trump's campaign wasn't that sexist and he's, you know, Trump. There's also Sanders' utter inability to identify with and support LGBTQ equality in a meaningful way. He's as Old White Guard a...

Re: Bohemian Rhapsody

There are a number of things that can affect your voice and how it sounds, including the size and shape of your mouth, teeth, and nasal cavity. Having to change how you hold your tongue could impact vocal patterns, cadence, and more. I'm not sure it can increase your range, but it does have an impac...

Re: The 2019 Grammys

Post Malone is awful. Janelle Monae was fantastic, the Dolly Parton tribute was solid. Kacey Musgraves' solo performance was good. The opening Havana event was terrific. Lady Gaga was mediocre at best and her rocked-up version of the non-rocked-up song Shallow was a misfire. I thought H.E.R. was als...

Re: Categories One-by-Two: Sound Editing & Sound Mixing

By your rationale, DWS, would A Quiet Place fit into the "surprised it wasn't nominated in mixing" category? Most people were predicting it to get nominated there as well and, unlike the other Sound Editing nominations, it fits the category really well in what it accomplishes and voters CA...

Re: Your best picture ballot

Jeffrey Wells is a misogynistic bastard. If Sundance had revoked Trump's press credentials, would anyone but the most sexist, racist, xenophobic jerks be upset about it? Diversity of voice is as important as diversity of output.

Re: Your best picture ballot

I don't know where I'd break the eight apart and If Beale Street Could Talk very much deserved to be on this list, but to rank the Best Pictures (which I binged the last 3 of today), here's what I would rank them. 1. BlacKkKlansman - The second best film about racism this year and, were it nominated...
