Re: The Host of the 91st Academy Awards Is....

Jumanji was a funnier film than anything else I saw last year. It's too bad you won't give it the time of day. I guess it's not high brow enough for your tastes.

Max, I was meaning that since Haddish was an Oscar contender FOR Girls Trip that they would have be at least modestly cognizant of her.

Re: The Host of the 91st Academy Awards Is....

It's like listening to a bunch of old women at the beauty parlor as they discuss that young whipper snapper Brad Pitt they've never heard of. Kevin Hart has a box office average of the 22 films he's been in of $83 million. His big hits were Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle ($400 million+), Central Int...

Re: Metacritic Awards Scorecard

I'll have my Precursor Tallies going probably in a week or two (I'm out of town this weekend or I would already be working on it).

Re: New York Film Critics Circle Awards

I think you're dismissing young Hollywood too much. This is the group that awarded Best Picture to Moonlight over La La Land. They aren't exactly anti-mature, anti-heady themes. Also, if you've ever listened to SOME young Hollywood types talk, they revere the older works and actors, so I don't think...

Re: National Board of Review

I honestly thought Richard E. Grant would better fill the J.K. Simmons spot this year. Well respected character actor finally getting his due in a role that finally brings him attention. Sam Elliott's a character actor of sorts, but I see him less as an actor everyone has loved, but never had a chan...

Re: National Board of Review

The Favourite pulled in $104k for its weekend average and I've heard from friends who aren't Oscar watchers who are excited to see it. So, I think it just takes the RIGHT kind of movie.

Re: Live Action Disney Remakes

I'm not the biggest fan of these remakes (I've only seen two), but I'll be damned if the Lion King one didn't look amazing. I have a sense that it will be a HUGE hit.

Re: The Official Review Thread of 2018

The film is about the Americanization of foreign cultures, specifically Asian. The symbiosis of a very traditional mindset with that of a more liberal, and sometimes more enlightened, American one. It's also about traditionalism being corrupted by wealth and power. Simple narratively, sure. I would ...

Re: The Official Review Thread of 2018

The problem for Widows is that it got a B CinemaScore, which means audiences were lukewarm to it in general, which means word of mouth isn't likely. If Beale Street Could Talk could be a player, but what about Mary Queen of Scots? The reviews are good and the film, although period, could make a run ...

Re: Film Independant Spirit Awards

Because I haven't seen it mentioned elsewhere and I made a big deal of it in my own post on the nominations, this is the first time in Spirit history that more women were nominated for Best Director than men (3 to 2).

Re: PLEASE READ: My Fantasy Oscar League

Even if it were a Driving Miss Daisy-type film, I think it would be a DMD of 1989 caliber. Meaning that today, such a film would be ripped apart for being a lightweight version of a serious subject. I also think the narrative developing around that kind of thinking might result in Spike Lee taking i...

Re: PLEASE READ: My Fantasy Oscar League

The Spirit Award nominations are the 16th, so your game is going to have a major issue if they count Spirit nominations. Also consider Hereditary, which is sure to pick up some Spirit nominations, possibly Actress and screenplay there, maybe more. A Quiet Place might if it's eligible as well. The la...

Re: Everything Is Great and Amazing

I don't remember the exact details, I just challenged him on his very proudly displayed vote for Ted Cruz. I think I mentioned that I couldn't imagine anyone voting for the man who considered themselves an ally to the gay (or other minority) community. I get feeling strongly about abortion, but he c...
