Just saw "The Upside of Anger", or at least I half-saw it. I tried to pay attention, but I couldn't help but drift a little from time to time to other matters. This is some pretty formulaic stuff, fairly contrived and fluffy stuff...clearly written by a man. There's a reason Kevin Costner comes off...

Just saw "My Summer of Love", which I rented on a whim after the trailer made it look like a movie about two teen girls in love who run away together (still researching...). Turns out the movie is the bitterest pill for what I was looking for. The ending off-put me as overly harsh and abrupt at fir...

Jeffrey Wells chimes in. Again: not a terribly reliable source, but he has some opinions that some on this board will certainly want to hear (he's still a pretty obnoxious writer). Cowpoke Surge It's time to say it straight (and I don't mean that as a pun): Ang Lee's Brokeback Mountain (Focus Featu...

I saw Batman again a couple of weeks ago and I felt more than a little underwhelmed. I still admire the film a great deal, but four hugely debilitating factors stood out for me: 1) we're not dealing with a real movie, but three storylines that feel overly rushed; 2) the Batman stuff isn't nearly as...

Not a big fan of his, but I'll cop to thinking he's pretty fantastic in L.A. Confidential. Master & Commander's my runner up. My problem with A Beautiful Mind has nothing to do with how much the movie was rewritten. Rather it's that they rewrite it into something less intriguing; though it's not as...

Although I've seen only two movies since my last update in August, it feels like a different list now. I'll be hopefully adding to this list as the Chicago Film Festival continues. **** 1. A History of Violence 2. The Best of Youth 3. The Ballad of Jack and Rose ***1/2 4. The Squid and the Whale 5....

Don't have much time. The Squid and the Whale comes so close to being a great movie that I'm tempted to just overlook its shortcomings simply on the basis that so much of it is so terrific. But Noah Baumbach's compositions are pretty ungainly and his eagerness to eschew sentiment in favor of bitter...

I give four stars to A History of Violence. The best way I can put this is that it's the Blue Velvet that Blue Velvet never was for me: a visceral, subversive, don't-know-when-to-laugh-or-cringe experience. I think much of this is due to the fact that I saw this one in the theater with not too terr...

Grumpy Gus Mike D'Angelo weighs in with a solid 66! [Pretty much the best adaptation of Proulx's story imaginable -- I just don't happen to think cinema is the right medium to depict an impossible romance spanning almost two decades. Petty though it may seem, verisimilitude is a real problem: Jake ...

I think Wong's latest is one of the most tedious great films I've ever seen; when I didn't love it, I hated it. And there were times when I really felt both. I suppose if you can stomach directorial excess (as I can, and at times am more than happy to -- like when I saw this film), it can be an int...

Thanks. I'm fine. I believe that George's absence is something of a habit for him around his family. He distances himself from them and shows up in their times of need. Adams appreciates this, but his brother (whose name I don't recall but he was terrific) sees it as an air of superiority that he r...

Sigh...moving...broke up with my girlfriend...parents in town...C- in Production II (too many projects at the same time)...how's about a little laughter for Sabin? I was astonished by how much I enjoyed Wedding Crashers. It's overlong and tries too hard to convince us that Rachel McAdams' fiance do...

Well, Sonic has a new no.1 and so do I (NOTE: the snake subplot is a little too mechnical for me, so actually I lied; I have a new no.2. That is all.). And I didn't see it coming at all. I thought her first film worked within the limitations of its triple short story-structure but was uneven and at...

Y'see, that's where the star rating just doesn't work! How facile an arbitrary allottment of stars seems when given the task of gauging that! That's where the "Rosenbaum-ian" scale (which I mentioned in my deleted post) comes into play: nothing shy of a masterpiece.

F uck this board! AARGH! I wrote my first long post in months and it deleted it. Admittedly, I had to talk to my girlfriend for thirty minutes in the midsts of posting about leaving her $50 plastic Christmas tree behind in a move and how the tree is not our relationship and that I do make time for ...
