Re: DGA Nominations

I'm not the biggest fan of Cooper's film, but losing is one thing, losing to a John Hughes wannabe is something else. I thought if he had to lose it would be to someone more serious like Matthew Heineman for A Private War . Magilla, I know you have this deep-seeded hatred for Eighth Grade (which I ...

Re: American Cinema Editors Winners

I'm just relieved Green Book didn't win. Someone pointed out that its award season profile (comedy Globe/PGA award/no directing nomination from AMPAS) is precisely the route a certain Miss Daisy took to best picture. So, any sign of weakness is welcome. I guess Bohemian Rhapsody becomes the favorit...

Re: Your best picture ballot

So, looking at this year's Best Picture slate, and the reaction from all sides to it, I wonder if this year is going to look something like a 1967 type year where we have a rethinking of what a Best Picture nominee/winner looks like, and different sides are struggling to define that. For everyone on...

Re: SAG Predictions

It's the same gripe Tripp has about Reza's posts. Let's not conflate personal dislike for something and a consensus choice not matching our own tastes. Phillip (or Flipp), not Tripp (FilmFan). Magilla, thanks for differentiating that. However, I will add my endorsement to flipp's comments. The blat...

Re: Trivia, if you please

Here's a question... Does this year boast the most nominations ever for foreign language films? Excluding the shorts, if you count up the nominations for Roma, Cold War, Never Look Away, Capernaum, Shoplifters, Border, Of Fathers and Sons, and Mirai, I come up with 20 nominations total. That seems ...

Re: Reactions

Mike Nichols did it on his film debut. Warren Beatty on his second film.

And Inarritu did it on his fourth feature.

Re: Reactions

Alfonso Cuaron is the first four-time nominee since the Coen Brothers in 2007. We have four possible repeat winners from last year: Jordan Peele, Sam Rockwell, Alexandre Desplat, and Paul Lambert. This is Scott Rudin's first nomination outside of Best Picture. Steven Spielberg extends his all-time r...

7th. I'm assuming you forgot about Bridge of Spies!

Their 15th overall nomination, though. Not too shabby.

Re: Reactions

Like many, I thought Paul Schrader's at-last nod was a good omen for Ethan Hawke, but the branches seemed unusually independent of one another this year. (Still weird for the most widely-acclaimed lead performance to be omitted. Sally Hawkins was only a top-tier critics' choice; Hawke won damn near...

Re: Reactions

Netflix had quite a day, not only with ROMA but with the over-performing Buster Scruggs too! That documentary category is crazy, and I've only seen 2, but from what I understand, much more solid than usual. We could see a shift in that category to a different type of documentary doing well. Also, th...

Re: Final Nominations Predictions

Anyone else feel like The Favourite kind of messed up their placement this year. With that fifth slot open, it seems like Weisz and Stone could have both picked up Lead Actress nominations, while Colman would be our frontrunner in Supporting Actress hands down.

I thought so... but there's really no excuse for him to miss out on a BAFTA nom is there?

Good point. Hadn't thought of that.

Re: 2018 BAFTA's

Could Linda Cardellini become this year's Jacki Weaver and just roll up on Green Book's coattails? That's...actually a great call. She was mentioned/thanked/praised a few times in those Green Book acceptance speeches, putting her name in voters' minds at just the right time. I can see this happenin...

Re: Potential Stats and Records for This Year's Oscars

You're missing the obvious big one - if Alfonso Cuarón gets nominated for Picture, Director, Original Screenplay, Cinematography, Editing and Foreign Language Film, he would tie Walt Disney's record for most nominations in a single year, with six nominations. At least in theory, he could break Disn...
