Re: The 2019 Honorary Oscars

Godard accepted the award but claimed he could not take the flight from Europe to the US because he couldn't go that long without having a smoke.

Re: Best Cinematography 1948

Anyone know why there were only 4 colour nominees? Anyway, I voted for Johnny Belinda & Joan of Arc. Omissions (some of which may not have been eligible) include: Letter from an Unknown Woman, The Red Shoes, The Boy with Green Hair, Louisiana Story, Unfaithfully Yours, The Search & Red River.

Re: Cannes 2019

Great summary of Berlin & the Oscars dws. Over the years the importance of Berlin as one of the 'big three' film festivals has declined to a degree, though it still has been a great festival for some lesser known talents of international cinema. Most notably A Separation. Funnily enough Ashgar F...

Re: Cannes 2019

Cannes has changed a lot. I remember back in the late 1970's Oscar nominated and winning films like All That Jazz (1979) & Being There (1979) had their international releases delayed until after they had shown at Cannes in 1980 - one of the competition rules is that a film cannot be released out...

Re: Cannes 2019

I read somewhere that the Kechiche film has 178 bum shots in the film which is an awful lot even for a film running at 206 minutes. There has also been speculation that the way more explicit tone in which Kechiche takes the film from the first was to deliberately provoke people and he appears to hav...

Re: Cannes 2019

Read somewhere yesterday that this Cannes didn't seem to have any disasters like Sea of Trees or The Last Face . All that changed yesterday, however, with Abdellatif Kechiche's Mektoub My Love: Intermezzo . It's gotten by far the most hostile reaction of any film in then competition, with most sayi...

Re: Best Cinematography 1949

I've never seen Will James' Sand aka just plain Sand . I've seen Sand but unfortunately on not on a good enough print to make a judgement on its cinematography but it would be hard to imagine its better than She Wore a Yellow Ribbon which is easily the best shot film of 1949. I voted for The Heires...

Re: Best Supporting Actor Shouldabeens

So maybe gathering lists of nominees is a rational, analytical process – made by the head, if you may, but when the picking of the ultimate favorite is made, as is rather clear at times from rummaging through your list here, other body parts have their say too. (The heart, I meant the heart – what ...

Re: Best Supporting Actor Shouldabeens

And we’re (or at least I am) back to my pet peeve of including/excluding “foreign”, i.e. non-English speaking, films for awards consideration. I remember we had once (Damien was still with us) a discussion about best loved songs from films. And even the most non-Hollywood-centric members of this bo...

Re: Best Actor 1972

Thanks for the comments. Bland is probably the reason. To be honest my first viewing of Cabaret back in the 1980s on the big screen it was pretty much on Liza Minnelli who really made an impression on me. York only really registered on the second viewing and on my third viewing I now see them as equ...
