Re: Details of the February 24th Presentation

FYI it’s the first time since 1992 (that’s 27 years) that the ceremony won’t be broadcasted live by any of the four open tv channels in my country. None of the them will even bother to broadcast the shorter version for international viewers that has been broadcasted since 1983 around here. That's a...

Re: R.I.P. Albert Finney

I've re-seen so many of his films in the past few years, it didn't occur to me that he hadn't made a film in seven years until I came across the notation in this article that Skyfall was his last film. I've watched a lot of his films in the last 2 years or so: Tom Jones, Saturday Night and Sunday M...

Re: R.I.P. Albert Finney

Here is a link to a terrific piece on Albert Finney. Lots of great photos and observations of him by people who worked with and knew him:

Re: (D)Evaluating the nominees

Precious,The Handmaid’s Tale has only aired two seasons so far. The next one will be the third season. Opps, I should have said I intend to stream the third season - don't want to wait 12 months to see it on Blu Ray. Oddly enough in plays on free-to-air TV here and then onto their streaming channel...

Re: R.I.P. Albert Finney

Apparently Finney told the Academy that he would not bother coming over to collect an honorary Oscar. Since the Academy does not present in absentia that was their last attempt at giving Finney one. Janet Gaynor and Myrna Loy were both awarded Oscars and their acceptance speech was filmed at their ...

Re: R.I.P. Albert Finney

I'd add David Warner, Timothy Dalton and late in the decade, Malcolm McDowell to the list. Warner and McDowell were definitely in the angry young man mold, Dalton not so much. Great catches. How could I forget David Warner  - one of the favourite actors of all time and it was nice seeing him ...

Re: R.I.P. Albert Finney

Was he the last survivor of the Angry Young Man cohort, or do we count Tom Courtenay? Maybe not quite from the "angry young man" school of cinema but I think his only surviving contemporaries from the 1960s are Tom Courtenay, Terence Stamp and Michael Caine. There is also (not from the &q...

Re: Details of the February 24th Presentation

Interesting article from Vanity Fair: https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2019/02/academy-awards-excluded-categories-cinematography-crafts-commercials This years Oscar presentation feels like a possible disaster in the making and so unfair to those nominated and receiving Oscars during 'commercial ...

R.I.P. Václav Vorlíček

Director little known outside of the Czech Republic who gained some late life interest due to the UK release of his delightful 1973 fairy tale Three Wishes For Cinderella. Hopefully his passing will lead to more of his work finding its way into US/UK distribution: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Václa...

Re: (D)Evaluating the nominees

I probably should watch Sharp Objects, if only because I enjoyed Jean-Marc Vallée's adaptation of Big Little Lies so much but having just finished watching Cary Joji Fukunaga's mess Maniac does give me pause to any more TV for the time beginning. I loathed Maniac. Sharp Objects is not like Maniac. ...

Re: On to BAFTA

Mister Tee, That was a great post that summed up the BFTA's, particularly for someone like me who really doesn't pay that much attention to them in any historical context. I notice want they nominate year to year but thats about it. I remember back in the 1970's/early 1980s watching them on TV. If a...
