I was shocked, too. But I guess this board is mostly for lovers of American cinema (and in some ways of America itself).

I've never done these lists. But if I did, I guess that maybe only almost 1/4 of MY winners would be from English-language movies (which is alot, considering that it's only TWO countries).

Slightly better, but only just. Again - are these the only non English speaking performances to be considered the best of their given year? 9 out of 87?

Weirdly enough, 1975 is one of the few years I could pick a winner with 100 percent confidence. I could do so knowing that that no amount of other performances of the same year which remain unseen by me could possibly change my mind.

This year belongs to Tim Curry.

Kudos on the Joseph Gordon-Levitt citation. Although, I would've give it to Ledger that year, G-L's performance in Mysterious Skin is superb.

Thanks Flipp, Damien & Bog.

Ledger & Gordon-Levitt was a hard choice to make. A tie would not be out of the question.

I've updated my list for 2007 & 2008, perhaps prematurely as I have not seen Milk or The Wrestler yet.

I agree with Bog, this is a terrific list, Precious.

I like Murnau's City Girl a great deal -- and it's fascinnating when looked at as the flipside of Sunrise -- but still, I have to say, seeing Charlie Farrell as Best Actor makes me smile because no matter what he'll always be My Little Margie's Vern Albright to me.

And I'm delighted that someone other than my gang of freinds appreciated John Hurt in Scandal. (Ian McKellen as Profumo is also terrific in the film, as is Bridget Fonda.)
