Per Variety, the show that received the most Emmy Awards this year, including the Crafts Awards given earlier, is Sherlock, with 7.

Here's the thing. While the nominations are made by the entire TV academy membership, the winners are selected by a group of "volunteers" who pledge to watch the submitted tapes of all the nominees. In the case of actors this group consists of only 50-75 "volunteers" who are most likely old-timers with time on their hands. Their background is broadcast TV and guldernit their votes are going to go to the tried and true. The result is that Golden Globe TV awards are and have been for years now smarter and edgier than the Emmys.

I had a sort of a vague theory the Emmys default to film stars so I was predicting Robin Wright & Matthew McConaughey wins. Didn't pan out.

That is the only funny thing about Modern Family and Frasier.

(Kidding, but eh)

It's funny you should compare Modern Family to Frasier because one of the co-creators of Modern Family and several of its writers come from Frasier.

Typical boring Emmy show. A few surprises but mostly the same people winning the same awards for doing the same thing they did last year, the year before and the year before that.

Eh. Not my best year. Wrong about Modern Family and Burrell on the comedy side and wrong about Cranston (dumb) and Marguiles (dumber) on the drama side.

So the only winner on the Series side that wasn't a past victor was Cary Fukunaga/True Detective.

Watching increasingly more television these days. I agree with a lot of Irvin's predictions. My wild card pick is Lizzy Caplan for Masters of Sex. I know there's a lot of hype around Julianna Marguiles and Robin Wright but Caplan is in every almost single scene in her submitted episode of Masters of Sex, which more than any nominated show on the air is hitting its zeitgeist currently. People love it. If nominations were held today, I think it would handily find itself nominated for Drama Series and Actor in a Drama Series. So, could be totally wrong but I'll go down swinging on that one.

Increasingly thinking that McConaughey is going to win for True Detective even though it's their last chance to honor Bryan Cranston. If Cranston hadn't won four times in the past, that might be enough to push the desire to honor him one last time over their one and only chance to honor McConaughey.

I'm going to predict Veep for Comedy Series. Orange is the New Black has more hype but it's also a Dramedy. Modern Family totally could win for a record-tying five times (what is it if not this generation's Frasier, an unexciting competent Frankenstein of other superior parts?) and the Cam/Mitch wedding sure helps voters make a case for voting progressive while also voting comedy. I'm guessing they'll give it to Veep which is a show that needs their help, which only gets more nominations ever year, and which improves in quality every year. They had a big season. I'm guessing Veep.

Best Comedic Actor and Actress are going to be Jim Parsons and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Best Supporting Comedic Actress is going to be Allison Janney. I can't imagine who else. I'm truly on the fence about Best Supporting Comedic Actor. Apparently, Tony Hale's episode is fantastic. I'm not sure about what episode Jesse Tyler Ferguson submitted but he's one of the last in the Modern Family camp to not win. Flip of a coin and I'll go with Tony Hale.

Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series is an impassioned head-scratcher between Aaron Paul, Peter Dinklage, Josh Charles, and Jon Voight. I've never seen Ray Donovan or The Good Wife but apparently Charles' send off in The Good Wife is incredibly moving. I'm not betting on Peter Dinklage because he only factors into the end of his episode. The end of Aaron Paul's episode is just as amazing and he factors into his entire episode. I'm picking him.

Anytime I talk to Republicans, I wouldn't call it a "conversation".

Stars react to nominations for the 66th annual Primetime Emmy Awards:

This is my favorite:

This is the first time since 1982 that NBC has not had a nominee for Best Comedy Series; in 1987 they had all five slots in the category.

This reminds me of when Italiano (and other board elders) accused me of making up the word "cisgender." And then accused me of using a word THEY'D NEVER EVEN HEARD OF improperly. I'm going to give anonymous1980 a pass here though. Very honest mistake.

Oh totally. To be honest, what I loved about that conversation is that it's not often you have a conversation where one side is totally right and the other side is completely in the wrong. I'm just citing it as a valid correction.

Also, excellent use of "cisgender".
